No reason to smile...

No reason to smile...

A Poem by Stan Lee
"

A sort of poem...

"
What makes you smile?

I see you smile but nothing’s there

I ask you why, you say “no reason”

Your eyes are laughing

Face beaming like the sun coming out

What are you thinking? “Nothing” you reply.

Do I need a reason?

Can’t I just smile?

How can I explain my happiness?

When it’s quite unexplainable

Waves of emotion

Don’t you get them too?

Waves of sadness, waves of nostalgia

This is a random wave of happiness.

What are you laughing at?

I heard you laugh but nothing’s there

I ask you why, you say “no reason”

But I heard you laugh!

Why is it I ask?

“Better to laugh than to cry” you reply.

I have no reason

Simply feeling ok

Maybe somebody sent up a prayer for me

Just for a moment I forgot all my worries

I’m not insane

Truly I’m not

I can stop laughing and go back to sad

But why is it crazy to laugh for no reason?

Why are you happy?

There must be a reason

You told me it was nothing

But I don’t believe you

No one’s happy for no reason

Not when their life is stuffed up like yours

I’m not a liar

I’m just smiling

It’s a sad day when you can’t even do that

Without somebody questioning your sanity

You’re right of course

I’ve no reason to smile

Maybe the stress of it all has sent me insane

Do you really think I’ve lost my marbles?

Why are you crying?

Your smile's upside down

And your eyes are all teary

I ask you why, you say “’cause I’m sad”

I liked the smile better

But this sad face makes more sense

You have no reason to smile that I know.

Thanks for reminding me.

A message for you

A word of advice

Don’t demand reasons for a precious smile

If you see someone laughing, join in!

Happiness is rare

Smiles can be fragile

The common sad face is a smile upside-down

But sometimes it can be the other way round.

oh yes, a smile is much better than a frown. there's a day for lovers (Valentine), a day for mums, a day for labour. why isn't there a "Smile Day"? imagine walking around smiling at starngers, making their day that little bit brighter!
Love this one, Andronicus. good of you to send smiles to the reader. I feel this site needs them badly.

i like how you expressed "Waves of emotion/ Don’t you get them too?/Waves of sadness, waves of nostalgia/ This is a random wave of happiness." the narrator experiences one wave then another wave then another, as if waves just keep coming along and are random, but almost as if you can see them coming up too. i like this imagery. i also like how it makes life seem like a rhythm (waves are rhythmic, right?)

the conflict is also gut-wrenching too because the other person seems to want nothing more than to make the smiling person not be happy (sorta like the saying 'misery loves company'). i've met people like that, and now i only keep supportive people in my life. thanks for sharing this poem, Andronicus!!

I really like this. Nice reminder to enjoy the moments as they come and not question yourself too much. The different perspectives was a refreshing take. Excellent job!

Just read this again, Andronicus, as I was looking for something of yours to review that I haven't already done. I feel the same about this that I did the last time I read it and knowing a little about your life, it makes me understand even more what a wonderful spirit you are. Many blessings for today and a smile, in fact lots of smiles to you.

i feel is more like a dialog instead of a poem. a good self conscious dialog with a reflexive character.
