The Tapestry

The Tapestry

A Poem by Andrian D

The delicate web of destiny

ties us one to each other.

The thought, the instinct, the drive

to survive.

The bonds that hold us

though thin, are strong.

The goal that sustains us

could be right, could be wrong.

We meet for a moment, an hour, a day

Sooner or later we go our separate ways.

What changes occur when paths cross?

Do we grow or shrink, thaw or frost?

The threads of our lives

twisting, turning, meeting, parting

form a tapestry of infinite variety.

All joining to make the whole.

What first struck me was two things: the poignancy and the rhyming scheme, both effective. The poem's title - The Tapestry, which is indeed the main motif throughout the entire poem - brings a sense of philosophical unity through analogy, which is something I really enjoy.

I'm not entirely sure what to think if the ending; it is subtle, and I like that - but it feels like there could be a whole lot more potential for that. Perhaps it's just the way you wished it to be; subtle and, indeed, subtly poignant as suggested before.

'What changes occur when paths cross?
Do we grow or shrink, thaw or frost?'

This has to be my favourite rhyming couplet. This almost Socratic question provides us with a range of scenarios, all viable and all thought provoking. The result is to question subjectivity and step back to a higher level of philosophical thought; does experience and unity hurt us or give us experience - or perhaps the former gives even more experience than a positive impression?

Anyway, I'll stop with the wild conjecture and interpretation; it was a lovely poem and I am glad I found it. Enjoy your day.
