Spent Bills and Pieces

Spent Bills and Pieces

A Poem by Andrew Rayne
"

When leaving.

"
She broke my heart so badly,
that as the pieces fell...
they still fell for her.

When they hit the floor,
I could still hear the thrumming of her
footsteps as she walked out of my life;
could still hear the echo of her breath
as she took the last of mine -
My last glance, was her picking a piece of me off the floor
and putting me in her purse like a discarded bill.

She'll spend me later I guess,
the way I guess our first lunch together was bought
with the memory of her ex;
and I was just another fire that she used to burn the pictures
of him that she never threw away.

I didn't feel broken.
I clearly understood the difference between being
broken and destroyed.

this poem is amazing. acerbic and pained and numbed and introspective.
I can identify so much with this.
