Last Night's ReviewA Story by AndrewHA short story about an actress waiting for a review. For more of my writing, go to andrewhenleywriting.wordpress.comSophie woke up
slowly. Leftover mascara had welded her eyelids together. It required a strain
to open them up to world. Last night’s performance had drained her, but it was
worth it. Spectacular. She showered and combed her light brown hair, then made
herself a cup of three sugar coffee. After that, Sophie was awake enough to
leave the house. She dressed in sweats and modest makeup to go to the
newsagents. She needed to read the reviews from last night. It was glorious. It
had to have made the papers. At the
newsagents Sophie bought a copy of the local paper and " hoping " a couple of
the nationals. She impulse bought strawberry chewing gum at the till. As she
walked home, she squeezed every molecule of flavour out of the stick of
strawberry between her teeth. It was exhausted by the time she sat down on the
sofa with the papers. No mention of it in the nationals. Next time would have
to be bigger. Better. Bolder. Something that would go down in cult folklore.
Make her a legend. Icon. Sophie was front page of the local paper again. ‘Another
local policeman murdered’. © 2013 AndrewH |
