Inside the Head of a Drunk DriverA Poem by Andy RuffettInside the Head of a Drunk Driver.Hands behind the wheel as I start the ignition. I pull the car out slowly trying not to hit anybody. Don’t know how many beers I’ve drunk. See my friend behind the rear view mirror, Screaming something at me I can’t hear what he is saying but his face looks really scared. I feel like asking the poor guy what’s wrong. But then that beer kicks in and all I want to do is drive out of here. On the road I feel more relaxed, then when I was parked in the driveway. I remember at the party we were celebrating Karl’s birthday. Karl was turning seventeen, but some twenty one year olds had come to the party. Karl had to supply beer for the twenty one year olds. There were no parents there. The party got a little bit wild. And one of the girls pestered me to drink with her. She was seventeen and I was sixteen. We weren’t supposed to be drinking in the first place. Now I’m driving on the 401 on my way home. Look through my rear view mirror, I see red and blue lights and hear sirens. I know I’ve been caught before by the police. I slam on the gas pedal And start zooming down the road. The police are still tailing me. There has to be a way to lose them. Suddenly things start to get all blurry. I can’t see through the car window. Is that a truck? I’m not so sure. I hit it Total blackness. I never thought I would be the next drunk driver. © 2011 Andy Ruffett |
