I very much agree. Being yourself can bring great things, but also devastating situations as well. The world won't like who you are. There are bullies, and the media, and television and magazines all telling you to be something else. To be fake. And when you resist that, you become strong and confident and crate a heaven for yourself inside of your mind. It's wonderful, yet crushing at the same time.
By being ourselves is holding firmly with our conviction, and this conviction either can make us stand like a hale tree gliding aloft billow in the sky but is ended falling in the ground by the ravishes and lashes of strong wind, or this conviction can make us stand like a dignified mountain in the middle of raging storm.
As an aspiring poet, it is truly an honor that from my poem sprang another poem. Anxia must be very proud ( in a good way) receiving such tribute as yours.
A good write and skillfully crafted Senryu. Beautifully penned. A message of wisdom for the human condition. Well penned. Write on!

I am really enjoying these little but powerful tributes, Chris. Thank you for pointing the way to other works in such a thoughtful manner.
Someone taught me once that I had the choice to either look at Life as a place fraught with fear and danger, with tiny islands of safety; or as a place filled with wonder and joy in general but places to look out for. I think that is the best difference between heaven and hell on earth that I can articulate.

I opened my eyes
so very wide
to ...see...
... darkness come.
Listened with my soul
as the world moved
and the air danced by..
I learned - as a child -
how to shake and cry,
to feel lost,
alone,
to know how small I was
and could become.
I've played with the monsters under my bed,
opened all the closet doors...
held and let go of "forevermores".
Pain ...hurts -
love and letting go,
sharing even loss,
dreams ...fading til gone.
Somedays you welcome sunset,
others you welcome sunrise...
and remembering how to breathe
is really, really the farthest thing
...from your mind.
"Life is a terminal disease." All the doctors have basically told me so.
