The Bride

The Bride

A Poem by Ananya

Beautiful bride
Decked in colours and fragrances
Smiled shy
From under her veil

Eyes got wet
As father placed her hand
Into the hand of the man
Who was now her destiny

New home
New people
She trembled and tried to disappear
Inside the glittering dress she wore

Stunned
She watched the dress being torn away
From her shivering form
Her dreams
Crushed and broken
Like glass bangles on her wrists

Moon peeped in from the window
As she tried to count
Every cut
On her body and her soul

Oh my god! This is heart wrenching piece. I loved the brevity, how you almost showed the readers from the wedding day to the domestic abuse of the bride! It's shame that people forget that girl who has sarficed far more than her fair share needed to be treated as an equal if not special. This is not misogyny, this is inhumanity!
A very well penned piece!

I like how the sorrow just takes the reader by surprise in this piece; it just starts out nice and lovely and then comes the line "she trembled and tried to disappear." I also enjoyed the ambiguity of this piece, for even though there is an obvious feeling of anxiety and sadness, there are many plausible interpretations as to what is happening. The events taking place could've happened either during or after the wedding. Either way, I thought this was an enthralling piece. Well done, Ananya.
