Limited to My World

Limited to My World

A Poem by Anand Sehgal

During the innocent days of my infancy,
Whenever I went for an outing
holding my dad's hand,
We always remained on the southern side of
the  crowded four-way crossing ,
the side to which our house belonged.

Curiosity in me piled up day by day ,
but not the courage  as much as
I  needed to cross the boundary of
the world well -known to me.

My dreams too were limited to the parts
 I knew in detail,
I had been to time and again.

Even  in my dreams ,
whenever I tried to cross the road,
thick smog appeared out of nowhere
to make the 'new world' opaque.

Every time I returned from the edge,
I remained safely within my domain ,
ruled my own comfort zone.

We all need to break free from our comfort zones at some point and explore what is out beyond what we know. Otherwise life becomes boring, a mundane routine... this write explores the boundaries of dreams verses how we allow security to structure our lives to the point of keeping us from experiencing life to the fullest. Well done, very thought provoking piece, Anand.

I believe most of us cherish the comfort of the familiar, the serenity of home and yet if we didn't wander out of this sheltered exsistence would we truly be living?...Thought provoking and well written - as always, a delight to read your words.

Thanks you dear Julie for the kind review. Glad that you liked it :)
The comfort zone - a necessary place of refuge, but so crippling too. Leaving it is so scary, yet so liberating; and ultimately, the only way to grow. A good and thoughtful piece, Anand.

thanks a lot for the kind review Rita :)
Sometimes, what may seem to be an abyss at the end of your comfort zone, is actually a small ravine to make you fall, pick yourself up and grow. Then, you discover that your comfort zone expands and continues to expand as you venture further and further - pushing yourself to the limits.

Thank you Prachi, glad that you liked the piece :)
The comfort zone is such an anomaly; a seemingly safe place that shelters us from taking risks and meeting challenges head-on. Not that it's a "bad" thing; simply not an adventurous one. I like this poem (though I feel it is unfinished...) because it reminds me that though I want to hold my children's hands for the rest of their lives, I will only do them more harm by not letting them go and exploring the world on their own.

The comfort zone is so very enticing and yet very often growth emerges from discomfort. We are trapped in the conundrum of it all.

life seems to all about the choices we make . In true sense !
Too often we stick to what we know because it is safe and we crave the normalcy of the familiar.Great poem Anand :)
