Deceased Mourning Dove

Deceased Mourning Dove

A Poem by Anand Sehgal

Shoot me and destroy my chest ,
without giving  even a second thought;
Wait and watch , until I die .

After you see an intense vermillion patch
passionately spreading over my stainless shirt ,
you might like to carve on the forehead
of my carcass-
"Deceased Mourning Dove"

Rest  assured that,
by taking my life , you won't invite the scourge of God.

To let you know,
Since the prehistoric ages my life has always been
valued by the metallic cartridges ,
not by the currencies you deal with.

Tremored, taken aback ,
Since time immemorial I have remained the same ;
speechless forever,
in the ancient, prescribed way.

This is a societal piece...one that sheds a strong light upon the world as we know it. I like the metaphorical nature of this one, and the way that you have said so much by saying so little. The imagery is great, and the message speaks for itself. I particularly liked the second to last stanza...very strong.

Wow, so final at the end and what is encountered to cause this silence. Images are not pretty, but graphic and telling.

I love this piece, it goes against the grain of others in its genre. A brilliant meaning and a brilliant read :D

You turn some very cool phrases here. I love the "ancient, prescribed way" that closes it out. I also detect a metaphor in the killing and even the mere mention of a dove, considering its status as a symbol of piece. There's an ominous, cynical feel to this piece...and I love it haha Seriously though, this is a real thinker of a piece that sticks with the reader after it's been read, and encourages multiple readings. Well done my friend :)

This has very strong symbolism and metaphors. That which is the gentlest very often suffers the most. It has a lot of philosophical merit and it is beautifully written.

Powerful imagery, I don't think the dove ever dies, just some sleep too soundly..nicely 'pen'd Anand!
