See What Happens

See What Happens

A Poem by Anand Sehgal

A bustle-jaded world,
A deception-faded world,
Warned him not to become an artist
and to change the path.
He became one, on his own merit ;
Knowing little ,  people's taste greatly varied.
Now the stone-semblance enjoys
'Avian feces' , that dries in sun-bath,
and cracks to tell the truth.

The experience of struggle somehow enriches the quality of an artist's work and himself. Find the truth in the struggle. I live in two worlds - science and the visual arts - which, while diametrically apart, have commonalities. As scientists seek the truth, artists seek the truth, too. The difference is that as a scientist, I have to back everything up with facts. The arts offer a different perspective... I've helped manage artists while pursuing grad school in the sciences... My observation as a scientist: In order to come up with good art, you have to tell a good lie in order to tell the truth.

Hope you have found your path - never looking for an audience but doing it for yourself.

I love the last telling stanza with truth realized and reflected in your words.

Your first stanza is I might think --change his path....
It is a warning in a cruel world.

I like how the concept of being an "artist" here is not one with a good outcome. It is one of being misunderstood, and ultimately left out to dry (so to speak). Perhaps, you are saying the becoming an artist without understanding that the world is not always willing to embrace true art, is just subjecting yourself to an unnecessary hardship? I like the struggle for artistry here, and the image of the path not ending in reward. Great job!

thanks a lot Sarai, you got it right :)
Oh, the luxury of choosing to be an artist! If many of us pursued that course, there would be a lot of starving poets out there. (How many poets are forced into self-publishing and end up with stacks of unsold books.) Most pursue it as an avocation, unless I am sadly mistaken. And few grow up to be Wallace Stevens or Ezra Pound. Even Wallace Stevens was an executive at an Insurance Co. (I can identify with that though my poetry is not quite up to his quality, and I'm only a lowly Accountant. lol) Sorry to go on, but your poetry always does that to me, Anand. It is a real pleasure to read your work, my friend.

Avian feces. Wow. Don't become an artist. Wise words but do people choose to become writers? and artists? or is it a curse?

Thanks a lot Kelly, Glad that you liked the piece. I enjoy your poetry too , very much .
There is a dire need to become what your heart tells you, regardless of the consequences... and sometimes we jump into situations feet first, with no knowledge or idea of the pit falls and dark crevices of entrapment...the cracks will always be there.

Intriguing write!

Thank you so much Robbie , keep reading :)
Artists do not have an easy time in this world. Surely our art is often misunderstood and rarely valued. Knowing you are an artist and that you enjoy what you do is a reward in and of itself. Being the master of your own fate in this world is very important. Well written philosophy. Lydi**

Circumstances sometimes don't let you have the control . Thank you Lydi for the kind visit :)
All that we bear is truth, regardless of who eyes or ears find it. For it comes from somewhere inside of us, even in lies truth can be found. Very cool my friend.
