Town of Limbo Chapter Three: Playing with a GhostA Chapter by AnAppleIt's a horror story meant to specifically appeal to teenagers. It takes place in an uncanny, paranormal town with powerful entities at work. Indeed, all is not well in MortorvillePlaying with a Ghost
“Eugenics is..,” says the substitute teacher meekly, “um-the study of improving the genes within a population.” Walters pencil breaks his pencil and grits his teeth. But it isn’t his wounds denying him his second nature note taking, it’s that Jordan. Or rather, the empty seat where Jordan should be. Even when he was there, he didn’t touch, make eye contact, or talk to Jordan. Jordan would respond in kind. Jordan’s eyes were coals, his skin was copper, his hair was shadows. The worst part was that birthmark, covering around half of his face. It made him look diseased. But Walter would steal a look, whenever he could. Jordan wouldn’t’, and that meant Walter was losing their little game.
Most kids in this school would not be able to play this way. Most kids don’t understand the power of silence. In their weakness they talk about themselves, trying to pretend an intelligence that they don’t even possess. Walter doesn’t need that though. He knows his power, and they know it too, without him having to say a word. The only thing speaking does is show weakness. Jordan does understand the power of silence though, to a terrifying degree. Even when he was there, it was as though he were a ghost, as though he could be right next to you and yet feel worlds away. Today, though, Jordan is not here. So, Walter thinks, what difference does it make whether he’s here or not. Walter still feels his ghostly, silent presence, and more than ever, feels he is losing this game.
