He Said He Would Love Me Forever

He Said He Would Love Me Forever

A Poem by Amyrain

He said he would love me forever

He said he would love me forever

Well forever must be now

"it's not you, it's me" he would insist.

As if I'm some young child whose parents
are making promises of Santa's arrival during the night.
I am not a child.

"I need to take time to find myself" he said, unconvincingly

As if he's been abandoned in a forest
lacking a map and any means of communication.
He knows exactly who he is

Communication; something he never wanted to do

"you know how I feel about you"

he would say, lifting my chin up with his hand
to show me his gleaming smile
A smile I could never resist smiling back at.

Until today

Once again he lifts my head up
with his hand on my chin and smiles

"we can still be friends" he claims

He starts to walk away, turns around to wave, with only a half-hearted smile this time, as if I am no longer deserving of his full, gleaming smile.

I deserve the full smile, I do.
