I like that this view is positive. So many people complain about how terrible it is. I am always like, yes no one is perfect and the past was unfair and unkind, but we are moving in the right direction. And look at the rest of the world. There's so much disease, famine, genocide, infanticide, war and poverty! I tell people that we are spoiled. They have no idea what harsh conditions are ad are lucky to not have bombs blowing up innocent homes and kids. Thanks for writing.
Staying positive is wher it is and it is hard to do so when others are negative and their negative forces all around you.
I try to beat it out my life and avoid the drama, so I can be positive--it is a hard fight.
War is ugly and it causes so much pain.
Hope is all we have sometimes and it keeps me going.
May Peace be with us all!
It's nice to see something politically positive in a time of unrest. Freedom is priceless, and usually paid for by the blood of others. Thanks! Great write!

Thank you Mark...good to see you buddy its been long time, hope all is great!
Yeah the colony did well for itself and for the world it has democratised better than any imposed dogmas ever did - it has made this world we all live in - why not trumpet your pride.
A lovely reminder of what we have. My husband, an immigrant, always says that we, as Americans, have no concept of what we have here, of the essential freedom in every aspect of our lives and thought. He says you can't find anything like it, not even in Europe. You're poem reminds us that we should be proud the nation and people we are, and thankful of what it took to give us that freedom.

But, he lived in Germany, under Political Asylum before coming to the States. He traveled extensively in the Middle East and in Europe, and speaks six languages. He says there's absolutely no where else with the sense of freedom that seems to be in our very pores.

I love this articulation of what America idealizes. We all owe her so much. If we all did our part in participating in her direction, rather than delegating our responsibilities to our elected officials, there might be a higher fidelity between ideals and reality. There is such a high correlation between who is elected and who spends the most campaigning that it is hard not to be jaded or at least cynical.
The success of any democracy depends on an informed electorate. An informed electorate depends on a free and objective press. We have become a nation of sheep. We follow a leadership beholden to Political Action Committees (PACs) who have financed the campaigns of both candidates. Our elected officials depend on the allegiance of these PACs for re-election. Contributors to these PACs, by definition, have plenty of wealth as do the owners of major news media sources and distributors.
Our founding fathers designed a government of checks and balances. We have allowed their intentions to be trampled in a stampede of manipulators who have used capital to control and corrupt the ideals you have articulated so well.
I love the concept of America. I am dismayed at how poorly we preserved and protected this ideal...
