A Simple yet True Story.....

A Story by Arielle Ann

Jay was just going through the notice board devouring the nostalgic reminiscence on the ground floor of his engineering college which he had bid goodbye the previous year .He was just checking out what new campus recruitments were going on in the college, when he heard the chattering voice of some girls and intuitively glanced upwards to view them coming down the stairs; First years ,he thought and an that moment something happened- a girl ,petite and fair with a lemon shade short kurta accompanied with a green Patiala caught his gaze. He noticed her quick and agile gait but small steps as she turned back to look at him just for a second and headed for the exit, without a backward glance, towards her hostel. He watched her retreating back thinking,” Something about her was attractive, was different, I noticed her “and that evening he narrated her to his friends;”I saw a cute girl in our college today”.

After 5 years:

Jay was restless, his parents were constantly reminding him of marriage “You are 28 now my son, look for a girl or let us choose one for you”; his mom was in continuous and tremendous tension, fearful from his recent breakup which had left them all shocked including Jay himself for he was losing belief in himself or on anyone he met now. He used to spend hours on his window sill overlooking thousands across the street of Delhi , listening to all the tragic songs and composing poems or calling friends ,which we all do when we are alone, melancholic and sad…about life being so ruthless and cruel, etc etc.

Aisha was growing frustrated with the life; her breakup with her four year old sweetheart from college had left her unstable; she had simply got bored of him, his not so good looking face, his conservativeness, his holding her back in everything she wanted to do, her friends constantly reminding that he was not suitable for her; and so one fine day she had finally left him, for good .She was heedless of whatever she had done. Her job had brought her here to Chennai and now she was alone again; she was confused now…she needed someone, tired of all her broken relationships and mistakes , she wanted to share her true self with someone. She wished someone would understand her views, her vision for people and society, her emotions, so complicated which only she and no one else could comprehend .An introvert by nature but a seeming extrovert to all, the misleading image of the cheerleader and strong women which she had conjured for herself did not allow her to disclose her woes to anyone.

Aisha and Jay, both of them had joined almost all the sites in the internet discovered by mankind till date, watching all movies that had been released so that they could relate themselves to it; she would shop to overcome her dissatisfaction, eating out almost everyday and he was chatting with all girls (none close to what he wanted though), playing badminton and lazing away in front of the home theatre. And that is how, surfing through the orkut, one day he saw her…he read her profile, it touched him, and he wanted to know her more. So he immediately sent her a request” please ping me in gmail if you feel free to do so”. And that is how it started; she saw his picture immediately showing it to her room mates” He is so cute!! Isn’t he?” and clicked “yes” ; looks are always a girl’s weakest point. And then they chatted for the first time in gtalk for entire eight hours; 8 pm till 4 in the morning till she heard birds chirping and watched the old men jogging below her balcony!!! Their first phone call was two days later lasting for six long hours and getting disconnected six times, but still they talked, about life, how everyone had been cruel to them, how only they were the targets of all evil people , how he was an angel and she was Cinderella. Their hearts went out, connecting with the same frequency and giving birth to a resonance so high that he , who couldn’t find words with a girl for one hour was chatting away entire nights and then entering blurry eyed in his office in the morning. She had found someone matured who she trusted had the ability to solve all her worries, because strangely she did not hesitate to confide in him her woes; age matters, she realized it now. He had now discovered the woman who could selflessly love him….And yes my friends you have guessed right… they had fallen heels over head in love in one week, and after marriage plans finalization from their parents within one month, he was thinking of coming to Chennai..To her…Oh how crazy love can be!!!!

And today when he gets down from the airplane rushing towards his sweetheart, he halts suddenly and stands transfixed as he sees her now in reality, not in video chat on in pictures, as he recollects the vague outline of the girl he had noticed five years ago..And he is sure now both are the same, both are one as he realizes what was different about her…”Her gait, the same agile, quick but small steps”; as she hastens towards him to hug him tight; and this is when he comprehends “ Strange indeed are the ways if God…he sends us signs, but it is we who are fools and don’t understand their meaning!!!”

Amazing...those life events some of us are only permitted to dream of put so wonderfully into words. My heart aches in envy over those who can experience such a thing as this. Well done!
