Sex and the City

Sex and the City

A Chapter by Arielle Ann

Versa staggered away from the doctors chamber as i sat and watched her slowly retreating back. She was maybe around 15, but now with a totally screwed future, 3 months pregnant with no chance of an abortion. The man who had led her to this stage of suffering was her own brother in law.....15 minutes of ecstasy and a lifetime of agony..We may say, “rape with consent".

Indulgence in physical fantasy, rape, mms scandals etc are a growing problem in our country. But why we may ask, in a conservative society like ours, so rich in tradition and culture, this problem has reached such a high momentum? Sometimes this question leaves me lost and contemplating.

An United Nations survey compiled that 2,50,000 rape cases are reported annually ,this survey covered 65 countries. But 60% of rape cases are left unreported and in a country like India, maybe only 1 out of every 69 cases are reported and 20% of the reported are actually convicted!

Looking from the psychological sphere, a possible reason of this rising trend in sexual assaults maybe loss of morality; but again, why is it so? People today are frustrated, dissatisfied in all walks of life, lethargic too...and pornography appears as an easy plus attractive means of relief and distraction. Continuous exposure to nudity affects the psychology of a man to a great extent and unknowingly he automatically develops a predisposition to rape etc which non existent was before.

Another cause maybe the portrayal of sex in India....sex is not a normal phenomenon here; but something which has been held totally to be out of track. But why is not giving birth to a child a daily medical activity, isnt making love just a symbol of your feelings towards your partner? Its not something vulgar. Openly people may shun the sexual activities, but an inner desire is present in all. Instead this denial and concealment arouses more curiosity and increasing crave for lust may lead a man to become a hyped scavenger. We should all remember that a thing unreachable creates much more longing than something which is easy to covet; this is the basic human instinct.

Again lack of other constructive means of entertainment, the media, websites, also contributes to rise of sexual passion. The sweet relation of love is depicted in the silver screen as lust; vulgar expressions and nude screenshots affects the thought process of the sensitive teenager so that he/she develops a growing inclination towards sexual passion which becomes permanently embedded in him/her and he grows up as a man with the mentality that prefers sex as his only subject of interest. This topic is so fascinating that we can’t blame them too; because once entered it grows deeper and deeper.

Hence we should concentrate at the roots that is the upbringing....constructive means of self occupation, realisation of ones capabilities and devotion towards your goals enables you to look higher and develop a healthy thought process. Parents should take a great deal of care in the upbringing of their kids so that they don’t remain idle....discourage them from being couch potatoes in front of the idiot box or pc and encourage them to play, read, sing etc.....coz one has rightly said “an empty mind is a devils workshop"

i wish i could deny you.. but the facts are true... and as i too belong to this country... i feel no less ashamed... searching for a solution at some stages seem futile for a country with such a population and levels of literacy... but we should never stop or retreat ... instead go all out to stop such activities... you have rightly pointed out the roots of the problem.. but who cares here... ! rapes are a matter of sexual amusement to the perverse minds that are aplenty ... what we need is common education...real education.. that teaches us to be humans and not predators...

Is blaming everything around us, a solution! Rape or sexual abuses are the results of the busy lives and the growing dependance on technology, which is impossible to be stopped! Yeah, I agree its immoral and inhumane but that doesn't change the Reality.
We are the ones who're promoting it every moment, unconsciously, and we are the ones who're highlighting it and demanding for justices! How insane!?
If by any means all these things could be undone, it is through reversing the wheels of time, which of course is impossible.
The best thing anybody can do is be protective for themselves rather than blaming or try sorting it out.

We live in a world where child are raised on their own. We need parent to teach kindness and love. Violence like in this story happen everywhere. I tell people. "Would you want your daughter to be raped." A strong chapter. Some pain cannot be forgotten. Thank you for the excellent chapter.
