Society, Ethics and Us

Society, Ethics and Us

A Chapter by Arielle Ann

The other day I was just dozing away during the afternoon when I heard terrible screams; I rushed out and saw to my horror that Smita had tried to burn herself alive. An ambulance had already arrived; she was wrapped up in a white blanket and carried away. Why she did that, I am ignorant about that till date.

Maybe this is a simple everyday incident nowadays, creating a fresh topic of gossip and then fading away, but I must say, that day left a deep imprint over me. I was shocked, horrified at our societies so called ethics and wondered how could anyone peep and dish the dirt while the girl was screaming in agony during the dressing of her wounds! We all knew that Smita"s reputation was a bit off track; her hanging around with her male friends was always eyed at with distaste by our cultured society. It’s true that such a behavior doesn’t deserve to be appreciated, but does even a criminal deserve to be rebuked when he is in pain? I don’t support that...But that’s how our people are, heartless I will say. Society today is completely devoid of the virtue called humanity.

Now let us look at this perspective from another point of view.

A blunder or a mistake may be done by anyone; but do we realize that once the victim commits a mistake and reflects upon it; he suffers the worst. Maybe he wishes to reform, start afresh; but do we ever give him a second chance? He will be reminded about his past everyday, all the time; its then when he loses his morality and despair engulfs him. His lack of confidence results in his withdrawal from a normal life and he becomes a total failure; sometimes maybe resorting to suicide. Do we ever sit back to reflect how depressed someone must be to take his own life which is so precious and which gives us so much hope???He kills all his hopes!

At times when society does not allow a person to reform, he develops a shell of stubbornness around himself and continues in his previous mislaid path,.he turns resentful, hating the people who did that to him and hence develops a negative attitude resulting in still more offence....moreover his ego too doesn’t permit him to be an object  of sympathy. He pretends; but maybe a touch of love would bring him back again!

Again we cant alter our societal structure; we are bound by its laws; so we have to learn to cope up and face it. A setback should be considered a challenge-one should never falter. Of course people will try to pull one back and obstacles are prone to appear; but for aliens we can’t destroy ourselves. None can depend on others, then why care about them at all? Facing people with an upright head and confident attitude makes them falter in turn, aiding us to move forward, avoiding all low cheap remarks or sarcasm.

But sadly though, most of us do care and screw up their lives; and this affects none except their own selves- people speak and forget. So understanding this soon enough will enable us to move forward and find a substantial meaning to life.

You touched on a difficult topic. To reform is hard. The person must desire the reform and work very hard. I agree with the final statement. We must learn to live with the memory and move on in a life.
"So understanding this soon enough will enable us to move forward and find a substantial meaning to life."
Thank you for a outstanding poem.
