Waiting for Nothing

Waiting for Nothing

A Story by Angel Alli

He’ll be here…

                        When?

Give it a moment.

            I’ve given him five.

One more?

            I’m not surprised.

He’s done this before.

He knows what this means.

I’m not so sure he does.

What about last year?

I’m sure he was here.

            He got drunk.

            Puked in his bed.

Oh.

            See.

Well, this will be different.

            I don’t really care.

Don’t say that!

            He always disappoints.

I think I see him.

Well, perhaps not.

            He’s not coming.

            Haven’t I said that?

He loves you.

            Then why isn’t he here?

He has his bad days.

            Yes, everyday of the year.

I’ll talk to him.

            And he’ll make his excuses.

            Stop believing he’ll change.

I’m sorry.

            For what?

Everything.

            You’ve done nothing.

            It’s always been him.

I was sure that this time was different.

That he would make amends.

            I said I don’t care.

Don’t you?

            No. I don't care.

Others have fathers that show up in their lives.

    I have you.

    It's enough for me.

I love you.

    I love you too.

    Now, Happy Birthday to me.

To me, it sounds as though she is running away and blinding herself from what the truth is. He is wrong for her and deserves so much better, yet she has not experienced any other way therefore runs back to him every chance she gets.

I like this. And I like how she answers her own questions
