You make me happy even though you cant be here. (Age 7)

You make me happy even though you cant be here. (Age 7)

A Poem by Amelia May
"

I wrote this when I was 7 after the miscarriage of a little girl that would have been my 1st born niece. 12 years later, I still think of her as my niece & I will always have a place in my <3 for her.

"
Poem at age 7:

You had a party before you were even born.
The news of a new baby made everyone happy.
So i was happy.
I was 6.
I am 7 now.
I wrote a story about you while you were still in your mommys tummy.
A lot of people liked it.
We were going to friends.
Your name is pretty.
It is a pretty name because your pretty.
But you dont know what pretty is
Because your not old enough yet.
I am sad that your not here.
And i am sad that your mommy is sad.
your mommy is my sister.
I am really sad that you cant come to your burying party,
Everyone else is sad too.
But we are happy that your with God now.
We love you.
I wrote this when I was crying.
I cried because you wont be here anymore.
Your mommy says you are though
But I miss you.
You will always be my friend.

Author's Note

Amelia May
This was in one of my "Poetry books" from growing up and I felt like I should share it with the world.
Keep in mind, I was 7 so some of the wording like "burying party" are a bit unprofessional.

AWW. I loved it. :) At such a young age, you wrote quite well!

So much feelings it blew me away. I love it, the mood is so clear and the style is good, touching.
And even when it's clear that it's written by a 7yo, it's still nicely written, and I can feel the confused pain behind it. Thank you for sharing this!

Thank me for sharing? No way. Thank YOU for reading. ;)
I think that's a much better way of describing it than the word "funeral" A burying party should be a celebration of having the pleasure of knowing the guest of honour at that party.
I think that's a wonderful concept. One we could all embrace and benefit from. Yes, it's sad that someone is no longer with us, but we can be happy that we had the good fortune to have been part of their life, however brief that time may have been.
A great poem.

I believe that burying party is a very accurate description of what should take place at a funeral. .. read more
this is so mature for seven years old...wow, impressive, the depth of the words you incorporated...such intense feeling of love for this niece you never met...she was special to you, even in the womb.

your poem reminds me of gwendolyn brooks...she wrote many poems from the perspective of a child....yet yours is real and you were seven.

Thank you for your feedback. I am glad you enjoyed.
Aww this has such a bright beginning and then it really goes downhill. This poem made me feel a lot of emotions when the transition occurred. I work at a pregnancy centre and I hear a lot of stories like that. Gives me intense feelings everytime. Great writing. I enjoyed this piece for what it was. The sadness is something I wish no one ever had to feel

Thank you for the review. =)
No excuses need to be made here. we are all peers here and are open and listening ears. The poem was lovely and innocent and touched a bit on early worldliness. Thank you for sharing what others might hide.

absolutely. thank you for the review.
I really like this and the burying party is the best way I can think of to describe a funeral and all that happens at the wake and family gathering after. It does feel like a very sad party to a child. The child in me relates since I buried my father and both grandfathers by age 8. The rituals seemed very strange to me. Kudos for posting these. I always love the simplicity of a childs mind. On my old site I had my daughters poems posted from that age, and think some of them are still brilliant in their simplicity. As an adult, our minds are far more complex and we search for the perfect words, when a child can just put them together. jan

I agree. I try to write poetry today and the complexity of my thoughts makes it near impossible.
