"Winter Flash"A Story by papermush08A short romantic novel out of a sad picture in my head :){ Prologue...
She
had the world in her arms as Adam clung to her; they were seizing each other's
warmth in the midst of the freezing night in the streets, with the peaceful
whisper of the wind hovering. For the first time again in her life, she
believed she had nothing to lose anymore, she found herself again in the world
where Adam was the joy her heart has been longing to embrace. Amusing, outgoing
but very sensitive and romantic she would describe Adam to everyone, the guy
who saved her from the shattered pieces of her life and the only one who gave those sparkles in her eyes and a pretty smile in her gloomy face. In the single bench near the
sidewalk, Adam's head laid his head on her lap as she wrappedhim with her slender arms,
he pinched her cute nose and laughed hard when she yelped and shot a mad look
at him; Adam loved it when she scowled because she resembled the face of a
morose little girl, and eventually she would smile because of this. "I hate you." She pursed her
mouth and averted her eyes from Adam. "Okay, okay hate me. I'd still love
you more." He laughed again, that kind of laugh that made him the most
beautiful boy in her life, someone who had everything to get her through her
troubles, and just like that she cannot let go of the moment. “I know. I know.” She mockingly rolled her
eyes. Adam got up and sat beside her, his grin did not waver and he locked her
with his tantalizing gaze. He put his arm around her shoulders as she sighed in
coldness, shortly kissing his nose. “So that’s my punishment for pinching
your nose?” “Well,
I love sweet revenge.” She finally laughed. “Yeah, yeah because you’re always the
sweet. gentle girl.”He nodded his head “And I’m the frisky, loud boy.” They both
laughed, resonating into the silence of the street with nothing but thick snow
and dimming streetlights, well everybody seemed to be at home or somewhere they
could heat up while they’re outside not giving a damn about the freezing
atmosphere, well she loved the winter season, Adam knew how much it brought her
back to her memory of the last time she had her parents with her, it pained her
with nostalgia but with Adam on her side it had changed the way she dealt with
her sentiments, reason why she became dependent on him. When they were together,
not a single circumstance could ever separate her from him, Adam in return
wouldn’t also miss a chance of keeping her beside him; they’re just the kind of
lovers that everybody got jealous with, and what a lucky girl for having
a first boy to love who already held the future in her mind. “Can we have a walk now?” She complained; breaking the boredom. “Oh, it’s an hour and a half that passed.”
Adam checked on his wristwatch. “Wow, it’s quarter to 11 and we haven’t
had dinner yet.” She fished her phone out of her pocket and goggled at the
time-check on the screen. “So where do we go?” “Same place of course.” Danny’s
diner, this became the usual choice since this was where Adam’s cousin works,
this was the place too where he first asked her for a date that she gave the
“yes” for a response. They started walking, heading to the parking
area where Adam left his car, they got carried away ambling down the road just
talking and listening to each other’s thoughts, taking advantage of the quiet,
hollow street that they lost track of the time and distance they have been away
from where he parked his car. Adam
tucked her in his arm as she buried her hands inside her coats’ pockets, she was
feeling cold already and could not wait to get to the diner and have some hot
coffee, and sizzling meal. “Adam?”
She earnestly spoke up, getting emotional again, for Adam this was not so new
but he always listened, and he understood why she had to be like this. “Hmmm...What’s
in your head? “He held her closer. “I
know I ask you this a million times but...” “You
can always ask me. Go tell me.” She
remained silent; closed her eyes sincerely and opened them up to him with sadness
she cannot explain; all of a sudden she wanted to cry for no reason. She met
Adam’s eyes but she can barely describe what she felt, only that her heart was subtly frightened. “I love you.” She reached out to kiss him for a second and slowly her tears were attempting to appear in her eyes but she had to stop them because she did not want him to be worried, besides, she didn't even know what to tell him. She was thinking that maybe they were tears of joy and yet something was prickling her core and she tried to avoid it. " Do you really promise me you will never
leave me?” “Why
are you asking me that?” “Just
answer me.” She whispered. He
stopped his pace and put his hands on both sides of her face, staring at her
pretty brown eyes, conveying his real love that assured her she will never be
alone again. “I love you okay? And of course part of it is my promise that I
will never leave you, I’m on your side wherever you go and no matter what you
do. I am here, you will never lose me” He kissed her lips and hauled her to his
chest, gave her a tight hug then he gently brushed the back of her hair as he
planted a kiss on her forehead. “I
love you more.” She breathed, relieved that it was the overwhelming happiness again
weighing in her heart. They
drew back and walked the next steps while holding hands, their eyes were intact
and instantly they sweetly laughed at each other with so much love painted in
their faces. They were just the exceptional radiant picture a midst the dull and
frigid kind of surroundings.
A
couple of minutes passed; the road found its voice with people everywhere. “Adam...”
She trailed off, lost and delightfully bewildered at the same time and had a
crooked smile forming in her lips. Adam was not saying a word for he understood what she needed him for, so instead, he tucked her crisp hair behind her ear and
tenderly kissed her as though tomorrow’s fate was written in a distant perspective.
Chapter 1
“Why are they doing this to me? To us? Why is Lily telling me
to send you out of my room? Did Lily talk to you Adam? What is happening with
her?” Devin was ranting with puffy eyes; she hated Lily, her aunt for making
everything difficult to her. Since she came to live with Lily and her cousins again,
her life turned to be her prison. It’s strangling her every day that she had to
stay in the house, stagnant and grounded; she cannot understand why Lily had to
be hard on her when it came to living her outside world, outside of the
tedious house. Summer was not yet that near to its end, she did not have school
to be her path for meeting Adam whenever she wanted to. “Can I please speak to you first Devin?” Lily appeared at her
door without even knocking. Her arms were crossed, terse in expression and
stiffly stood up like a grumpy teacher. “But Adam...” “Adam can leave now.” She ordered, not changing the look in her
face. Adam immediately let go of Devin’s arms that were held by him when he
restrained her from throwing herself to Lily’s room. “Adam please don’t leave, it’s too early.” Devin cried, she was
pulling him back but Adam was already away from where she was. She heartrendingly watched him as he turned his back and walked past Lily with his
head dropping. Lily did not mind looking at him but waited until he faded in
the scene, Devin can still hold on to the last glimpse of him out of her door
but he disappeared then. Lily slammed the door and took a few steps closer to her. “You
have to listen to me Devin; you know that I love you.” “I always knew that but you became strange. What is wrong? For
God’s sake tell me what is going on! If you love me, you must as well
understand...” Devin breathtakingly choked and sniffled. “or at least accept
that I love Adam. You don’t know what life I had when I met him, you weren’t
there Lily. Adam made me happy, for the first time I have felt again what it
meant to live without waking up to emptiness and longing. He loved and loves me
and we have a promise that you cannot just break! You are being unfair.” She went down the bed and looked out the window, it was a blooming sunshine outside and
trees were turning up to the breeze, she blankly stared at the lawn, like a mat
of mowed green grass was the only fellow that can understand what she felt. “Devin, please?” Lily calmly begs, facing
Devin’s back, her voice was still but her patience was slowly conceding. Silence
penetrated the empty barrier between them and none of them moved in their
stand. “I don’t want to talk to you unless you tell me what really is
happening.” Devin finally responded, almost whispering. Lily clenched her hands;
it took her a brief turning of the head to find a safest answer. “You’re under medication Devin.”
Devin hastily faced Lily with piercing eyes, mystified by the whole scenario of what she just heard; it was hard for her to accept that she was back to what was used to be, she would not want to concede to it knowing that she had managed to enjoy her freedom to be out there and feel real life. “Under medication? This is not... Is this why...” She closed her eyes, figuring out that it has to be why they were keeping her in her room for these past days, this was why she was in the hospital the other day and she went home like she was some kind of a strange visitor arriving, but worst to feel that she had to be apart from Adam just because she was in complication right now but then she knew deep down her heart that with Adam she can be outwardly normal and sober. She
fell down on the floor in tears, her palms caught every drop, Lily
approached her, helping her to get up and return to her bed. “Lily, this is not
happening again. This is not happening. I am fine.” She breathed and mentally checked herself,
there was no anxiety and a pang of emotional tragedy bombarding her anymore, all
was well and she was certain of it. “I am fine Lily. I feel very well!” Lily kept nodding to abate the hysteria that shackled the emotion of Devin; she threw her arms around her niece and buried her head in her chest. Devin faintly wept and every tear meant the whole world on Lily's back. She couldn't find the words to explain to her anymore because she was too afraid that she had to be honest and the poor girl will have to be that sick, tormented child again. Maybe things had to be taken slowly, in fact there's always a right time for everything. "Okay sweetheart, stop crying now. I'm so sorry I was being hard on you." Devin pulled away from her with eyes that appeared so hopeful and relieved. "So can I ask Adam to come back here?" Lily heavily breathed and feigned an encouraging smile. "Of course." She responded in almost a whisper as she tried to stop her tears. Like a wish granted in a blink of an eye,Adam did come back and Lily did not have to bother the lovers although she was not sure if she was doing the right thing. The sight of her niece's happy face is a stirring mixture of joy and anguish in her heart, she recalled he years of Devin when she didn't have a life to lean on, just misery and disturbances accompanying her that never allowed her to see the best of the world, and one day this young love came and she received those night calls from Devin that surmounted her with miracle hearing the rhythm of bliss, the voice of the child that used to be nonexistent, so for a while she didn't have a choice. "I don't want to see you with those eyes again. Okay?" Adam wiped the last remnants of tears in the corner of her eyes with his thumbs. "I am sorry, I know how much you hate it to see me crying like this." She sniffled for the last time and pressed her nose against Adam's thumb that had brushed her face. "But admit it, you still find me cute when I cry." And finally she laughed, almost blushing for what she said. "How sure are you?" Adam responded with sweet mockery. Devin mulled over and wistfully smiled."Oh, well I could still remember the time...I mean the very first time when..." Chapter 2 September 2007 Everything made Devin disoriented, not only for the fact that she's with strangers and a new place but for the abrupt diversion of her course to an environment where she had to be practically an ordinary student,a normal person. She was beginning to realize how impulsive she had been for ever deciding to venture a college life alone when she was never socially comfortable, and was never able to survive unfortunate circumstances all by herself. First two weeks and she already wanted to go home but she knew she did promise herself that she will make it through and she wanted everyone to stop worrying about her now. However, she occupied a corner of one of the campus' quiet hallways and freed her tears. "You are such a cute girl when you cry." She slightly jumped aside when a familiar pesky voice intruded in the atmosphere. She looked at him with the same charming smile he thought could lure every girl's heart-that's basically her opinion about him. "Are you really going to kill me with annoyance? Please stop following me. I do not appreciate you approaching me, I am not like any other girls you can flirt with."
