CagesA Poem by AmalieThere’s a bird in a cage
Yelling and squawking Making a fuss I walk up to the bird Asking “Why do you cry?” He shouts “I want to get out “Please let me fly!” I open the cage, out the window he goes Where he ends up, at least I’ll never know There’s a fish in a bowl Splashing and struggling Making a fuss I walk up to the fish Asking “Why do you cry?” He shouts “I want to swim free “Before I finally die!” So I take him outside, and put him into the stream He’s out in the world, living his dream There’s a dog in a cage Barking and biting Making a fuss I walk up to the dog Asking “Why do you cry?” He shouts “I want to run! “Can you take me outside?” So I open the cage, and out the door he’s gone No one to tie him down, he’s free to run So I sit on the steps and start to weep Making a fuss A small child walks up Asking “Why do you cry?” I shout “The bird got to fly, the fish got to swim, and the dog got to run, I set them free! “If only getting out of my cage was just as easy.” © 2009 AmalieReviews
