I Was Never Sixteen

I Was Never Sixteen

A Poem by A.Pinto
"

He seemed to have forgotten everything about us, so this was my response.

"

I was never sixteen, no one ever broke my heart

I never gave myself to someone who left me alone in the dark

Someone never called me "best friend" while caressing my face

Then decided I wasn't enough and no long could fill that place

Someone never told me I was amazing, the most wonderful girl

Someone never promised that together we'd travel the world

Someone never told me they missed me the day before they chose to leave

Never said I was beautiful and looked forward to seeing me

Someone never promised to be my friend, even after we were done

Someone never told me our time spent together was no longer fun

Someone never said he was sorry, that he did want peace

Then ignored my every presence and averted his eyes from me

Someone never made me melt because he smelt so sweet

And his shirt never comforted me and helped me get to sleep

Someone never cancelled plans because his life was on high-speed

Someone never refused to see me when I was most in need

Someone never made me open up like no one else could

Someone never cared for me like no one else would

I never worried about someone's feelings from the start

Someone never caught me off guard by breaking my heart

Fifteen was great, seventeen was better

But sixteen I never was

Believe in every letter.

well I liked the way the last three lines stick in your head, the whole poem has this yearning of wanting to be apart of something but never quite making it there. Even if to be forgotten or as it says in the 4th to last line even having your heart broken. It was a fun read and the repetitive opening of each line with the phrase: "someone never" seems to work in it's favor rather than against it.
I think at heart we've all had and even in the midst of even the most perfect of "fairy tale romances" still have moments like this where we think am I really happy and is he/she really there for me 100%? Over all I enjoyed it, look forward to reading more from you.

Ah I loved this! It was powerfully evocative and managed to pull at my heartstrings too. We've all been there :) thanks
