The Dance and Goodnight

The Dance and Goodnight

A Poem by Alyssa Solomon
"

Talks about a women's last night with her husband. Very profound.

"

One dance for my love, before I have to say goodnight.

Yearning, ever yearning, to be close to you.

Get up, just a step or two then its through.

One dance for my love, before I have to say goodnight.

Humming music for the steps of the dance. No radio

the florescent lights give this place an eerie glow.

One dance for my love, before I have to say goodnight.

He holds me tight. The IV slips out,

the angels watch over us this rainy twilight.

One dance for my love, before I have to say goodnight.

My fever is high is high and burning, I still fight,  I still try.

I am sure I will be better in the morning.

One dance for my love, before I have to say goodnight.

The room is spinning, my time is close. I start slipping through,

I thought I heard the nurse say code blue.

One dance for my love, before I have to say goodnight.

I am strong, the timing is wrong.  I give him a gift, watch him take off the lid.

One dance for my love before I have to say goodnight.

It's a picture of our wedding day.

On top of the glass is a note that reads

The dance of eternity.

One dance for my love, before I have to say goodnight.

He gets me up again, and holds me up to dance,

I started to drift in a peculiar trance.

One dance for my love, before we have to say goodnight.

I lie down, he tucks in my hospital gown. I squeeze his hand.

A single tear hits my wedding band, falling from his eye.

One dance for my love, I gently whispered the words, 'Goodnight'

I was'nt really in the mood to read but I saw my home page said "Return The Love" and I said to myself, "sure why not?" So I chose this one and began to read. At first I was'nt sure it was gonna hit me at all as something I would enjoy but as I kept reading I was waiting for what was next. I found myself entangled in it and wanted to leave an explicit word in all caps to express how excited and surprised I was. I'm adding this to my fav's. Great work poet.
