Dust and EchoesA Chapter by Greg CoopriderA short introduction I wrote as a prompt at a writing workshop.Dust and Echoes Glass
cracked under his boots as he trudged through the city. All around him,
three-foot tall blades of grass grew out of the splintered asphalt towards the
gray sky. They wrapped around the streetlamps and the bases of the skyscrapers.
The ground, covered in pieces of debris from fallen buildings, was barely
recognizable. Another slowly crumbled to the ground before his eyes, throwing
dust and rubble at his face, but he pressed further into the city. Every step
brought back more and more painful memories; memories of him and his friends
riding around on skateboards after school every day, looking for more ways to
get into trouble. He missed them so much, his friends, but he had more
important things to do than reminisce about his past. Something ran between his
feet, making him jump and turn to catch a glimpse of it, but all he saw was
dust. That’s all anyone saw here anymore: dust. Dust…
and echoes. © 2014 Greg CoopriderAuthor's Note
