Do you like people?A Story by Alex WareA few friends come round for drinks.Do you like people? The neighbours have come round for cocktails. You can’t make them very well, but you can manage a gin and tonic and maybe a couple of other basic concoctions, so you set to work. You haven’t had guests in a while, and watching the flowing fluorescent colours swirl and co-mingle, matches the mood of the gathering as John and Sally recount some story about their co-worker who wears a different hat to work each day knocked over a latte onto someones new starter contract. You watch everyone pretend to be happy, and realise you might be expected to come up with something yourself. You force on a chuckle, and smile as you pass John his drink. Unexpectedly, it crashes to the ground, shards of glass roaring outwards, the drink slurping on to the tiles.
Looking up, you realise that John isn’t there, nor Sally, nor your girlfriend Pam. “Who is Pam? When did I meet the neighbours?” you think aloud. Oh, that’s right, you don’t like people. Thank God you don’t have to come up with a story or fake laugh anymore. ‘Plus, I can drink Sallys drink now, don’t think I’ve had enough” you say to nobody in particular. You really don’t like people. © 2017 Alex Ware |
