Somewhere in Time

Somewhere in Time

A Poem by Allen Smuckler

This old man

shuffles in

slow & steady,

poured a gin

changes chairs

drinks his share.

Waitress wipes

his space

& dabs his face

loses his place

as he waits an

empty embrace.

Straw stands

erect &

at attention.

to serve his will,

serve him well

as he pops a pill.

Life’s smile

enjoys my face,

and all is good

with my world.

So I shazam

Billy Idol’s

Dancing by Myself

and realize… I am.

The grin disappears

somewhere in time

An a*****e screams,

the music stops,

the waitress wipes

my place as I

shuffle out

an old man..

alone…

and by myself…

somewhere in time.

A very good poem. I can see myself if I live long enough trying to find pleasure in a lonely end. Thank you for the amazing poetry.

you think the poem is about the old man and then the poet becomes the old man and we feel the sense of loneliness, the sense of that could be me one day, sat in a bar, drinking alone. this was moving and emotional.

Oh how the mind will deceive us when we are drunk on alcohol and music. I love the opposite play in this piece. the details allow me to see this man enter and exit the bar and all the antics he involves himself in before departing alone.

What a drift from scene to sadness. In quite a few lines, you went from seemingly okay place, if only with a little assistance, to loneliness and resignation; reminding the reader that life isn't always what it seems, past, present or future.

Excellent. I like your pen upon this poem with a tale.

What a brilliant glimpse at a moment in time... this place that abides in time and space... a world all its own... And somehow your magic takes us all there and fills us with the ambience of loneliness... Amazing.

Excellent poem, with a lots of self depreciatory observations mixed with humour and old fashioned wisdom. The verb Shazam intrigues me,I`ll work at it and might even add it to my collection.Great work.
