Not Far Away

Not Far Away

A Poem by Allen Smuckler

I looked deep within my sister’s eyes today

and reached inside her soul...

I pulled and tugged at nature’s way

and said, not far away...

I know within my being,

my sister’s eyes though glazed...

can sense the world around her

she’s not that far away...

She’s standing at the entrance

the precipice, the door...

she’s searching for the key of life

to step outside once more...

It shows upon her face today

she’s aching to be free

It’s time my sister, you can see

you’re not that far away...

And now to speak the words we need

to say you’re back again...

relate the journey you’ve been on

with purpose and belief...

you’re not away,

 but here to stay

as we rejoice the day...

My sister passed away a few weeks later.
It would mean a lot to me if you would also read "Does She Hear" and "I Wept Today"
Thanks, Allen

A poem written with love and hope. I'm so sorry for your loss.

A tribute that anyone would love. I felt every sylable of this piece. It is powerful, inciteful and I instantly could relate to her struggle. I can't pick out one line that was special to me because the whole poem did. Well constructed and the feeling was right on. Very nice work.

A very sad poem but a wonderful tribute to your sister. Sadness is a part of life. Hopefully it helps us appreciate the happier days a whole lot more than just enjoying them.
A really wonderful poem.

So very beautiful, so very sincere .. such awareness of how it was, is .. that's the finest tribute you could write, Allen. Lost two sisters, we have, the hurt never goes away but somehow, very slowly, the best memories become remedy for that ache and that's what our darlings would want for us. Hugs.

Such a sad write. But it memorializes your sister. We as Americans often avoid pain. However sometimes pain is beautiful in that it keeps us in touch with the love in our life

A most heartfelt crying out, Allen. Even the fluctuating rhyme scheme bespeaks your confused desperation, your need for her to open her eyes and smile at you as though to acknowledge your love and devotion. I have not yet endured the loss of anyone this close to me, let alone a sibling, but I completely covet the depth of your devotion to her. Trust me, she knows. She always knew.

I can relate to loss and this is beautiful love..to rejoice and know they are in the heart still is never easy! But to know they are can sometimes make us realise they are not far away...
Wonderful write love xoxo

Lost of family leave permanent sadness. I called my father at 8pm for 30 years on Friday. I stop and wish to call him to hear his voice and laughter. Some memories can bring smiles and sadness at the same times. Thank you for sharing the excellent poem.
