Poetry Awaits (Apparently)

Poetry Awaits (Apparently)

A Poem by Allen Smuckler

Apparently,

 I thump my thighs

missing a beat

left by my side

in the argument

of confusion...

Apparently,

 I look the fool

aimlessly adrift

forlorn in my

abstract direction

looking for keys…

Apparently,

 I’m not the boy

playing baseball

in back my house

the weakest one

doing his best

to succeed, not to fail...

Apparently,

I fantasize, still do at 52

‘bout being the best

standing straight

and erect

at five feet five

It’s always been

it always will…

Apparently,

 my dormant tracks

came fool circle

with endless

Cheshire cat-like grins

pretending I’m in,

but I’m not...

Apparently,

 and eventually

the laughter subsides

and the hurt

hides inside

while the clown reappears

or the drum rat-a-tats

and the pain still remains...

Apparently,

 I died a million times

I’ve sailed

the dreaded seas

near and far

upon the ship

taking one last trip...

Actually,

 I’ve learned to cope

and deal with the disease

while I live the life

and the hand

I’ve been dealt...

Allen writes both excellent prose and poetry. This is excellent too, I really like the second to last verse which is really well done, very visual, almost photographic, and the half conjunctive apparently that intros the verses, well done.

Sometimes we hide our deeper more sensitive emotions from the world. We pretend to be okay when we aren't. We don't want to give others more power over us or mock us when we are hurting inside.

I am having a hard time reading today. I keep messing up my English so I apologize if I write something that makes no sense. Anyway...this was actually a good read. Well in my opinion everything you pen is good. This is thought provoking...at least to me it is. Keep up the great work!

Your work is like walking with you hand in hand on journey. Thinking back...being here now ... then casting a look to the future.. Your work always touches my heart Allen.. excellent penning..xo

Very insightful, dear poet. The verses lead to a place of revelations. A place where your mind has taken your thoughts and painted us the image of strength...
Great piece!

Wow, what an intricate and intriguing poem. I love the entire piece; especially the eluding to growing old and dealing with life the way it is "dealt" to us. A very well defined piece of work.
