Birds

Free verse

BIRDS

 

I have never seen

     birds

     fall from the sky

     to earth

     with crumpled wings

     feathers askew

     and 

     eyes which no longer see

     no longer capable

     of song

 

Birds

     by the millions

     no

     billions

    from the beginning

    of

    my time in years

    not one

    at any place I walked

 

Oh maybe there were those

     beaten

     and killed

     by carelessness

     but

     they did not fall from the sky

 

Perhaps

     I think

     they maybe flew toward the moon

     careful for me not to see

     and be sad   

     at the silence of the loss
