Secrets and SecretsA Chapter by AlinaTheCacti
"I never realized how cozy your apartment was," I marveled as I walked in right behind Lil. Her apartment had what every other apartment had. A tucked in bed, a kitchen, a few couches, a ton of party food and a flat-screen TV. But what stood out the most was the warm yellow lighting that took the shape of the sun and how the pictures of her childhood were all posted on one gigantic wall.
"It's not that fancy, but I can live with it until I get a life," She explained as she waddled to the counter and grabbed root beer and chips before collapsing onto the couch. She leaned over the edge of the couch and reached for the remote, but she was a few centimeters away. I went over there and picked up the remote and gave it to her. When she looked up at me, her eyes were a bit misty before becoming crystal clear again. "Sorry, I almost forgot that you were there, thanks for how much Uncle Mark pushes me every day at the pub," She apologized as she got up and sat in a sitting position and patted right beside her. I accepted the offer and sat down next to her. Leaving a foot left between us. "Are we going to relax for a bit before getting the notes or did you make those up to get me here?" I asked. She held up her pointer finger as her mouth was filled with chips and root beer. "Ah, sorry. I'll go grab them right now," She left the couch and went to the other room, which I think was the bedroom. I admired her style of fashion and design. Most people would just go and buy poke a dots or stripped everything or something that was on the top fashion books/websites. But she just bought what looked comfortable. The couch was one hundred percent extremely soft and relaxing. Thinking about this made my mind wander to her bed and how comfortable it would be... And how... It would be like to kiss her. Just as the thought was finished, she came back to the couch carrying a cardboard box with a crooked lid that had papers sticking out. Just before she reached the couch, she tripped over my leg and the whole box went flying. I was able to catch her from hitting the ground. But the box was now on the floor, with papers going everywhere. "Ah Sorry about that," She apologized as she stood back up. Dusted herself before going to pick up the papers. I stopped her by grabbing her around the waist and pulling her back onto the couch. "I'll go clean it up and examine it while you rest," I ordered. I walked over to the mess, the first paper that stood out to me was the one that was in the moonlight. There were glowing invisible words on it just like the last one. This time it was inscribed with harmful words. Come to the top of the top tonight. If you don't, the people you about care is going to pay for it. --Brain I looked back on the couch and it looked like Lil was enjoying the movie she was watching. I looked at the screen and realized that it was a romance movie. I smiled to myself as I looked back and placed each note against the moonlight. Some didn't have anything, others had harassments. They all seemed to be from this one person that was a leader of an organization that does tests on people. If they don't show, they start sending harassments to them. I shook my head as I felt the urge to protect Lil more. When I looked at the actual pieces of paper, they were written on documents. Meaning either the criminals were either A) Working with their parents B)They got ahold of documents that only the recipient should read or C) They break into the parent's house and wrote it with invisible ink that only glows in the moonlight... Or does it work with lemon juice? I walked over to the fridge and opened it. The small blow of chilly air that came out of the fridge felt so good. I saw a jug of orange juice, some sandwich supplies and a ton of tofu and hot green peppers. It looked like she hasn't touched the fridge for quite a while since some of the bread had mold on them. I opened the freezer of the fridge and found frozen lemon juice. I carried it back to where the couch was all the papers were still scattered on the floor. When I walked back, I felt the floor creek a bit too much and I bent down. There was a piece that wasn't fully inserted. "Lil?" I whispered. There was no reply. I looked over the top of the couch and found her fast asleep on the couch. I bend down to where the piece of wood and lifted it. To my surprise, it lifted and below, there was darkness. I slowly reached my hand down into the darkness and yelped back when I felt something pointy. I shook my hand before reaching in there again. This time pulling out a small rectangular wooden box. In the front, it required a key so I couldn't open it. I knew how to pick locks, but inside could be something that protruded in Lil's privacy, so I put the box back and gently put the floor back. Reviewing my notes, I opened my notebook. Mr. Dawkins mentioned that there were three men with Thomas on the last time anyone saw him. One of the men bore a dig bite, another had green eyes and... Wait. I walked over to Lil and gently lifted the jacket pocket and reached inside. "Thank the lord," I muttered as I found the receipt with the phone number. I dialed the number using my phone. On the third ring, a man answered. "Jacob," He replied. "Hello Jacob its Detective Andrews," I answered. There was no reply for a few minutes. "Hello Mr. Andrews, how can I help you?" He replied. His voice was so tired and husky, meaning I had just woken him up from sleep. "I heard you were one of the men who saw Captain Thomas Freddy," I continued. There was still no reply, but a few whispers before he answered. "No, I wasn't one of the last," He replied before he gave me a story. "It was true that I had come on Friday the Thirteenth with my buddies Hayden and Kyle to the pub, but after when I left the pub. I went straight back home because my wife and three children were waiting for me. I had left the group at eight at night. Leaving Hayden and Kyle with Mr. Freddy at the Carnival because apparently Kyle and his girlfriend was supposed to meet there." I had copied word for word what he had said in my notebook, something didn't match up but I decided it could wait. "Did you go to the Carnival?" I asked. He waited for a second before replying. "I was the only one that didn't drink that night, so I drove them there before waving goodbye and heading back home." "Do you know what place the carnival was hosted at?" "Yes, it was hosted at twenty-one Jackson street," He confirmed. "Need anything else?" "Can you give me the phone numbers of your buddies Hayden and Kyle?" I asked. "No, I met them using an online social media called Facebook," He replied before cutting the call. "Damn," I muttered to myself before looking back at Lil. The soft features of her face calmed me down. I went back towards the couch and lifted Lil into my arms before carrying her towards the bedroom. I tucked her in and tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear. "Goodnight Little Lil," I whispered before shutting the door.
