Falling Apart In Antamarina

Falling Apart In Antamarina

A Story by Alice Claire Culley

Hi! My name is Elizabeth, I want you to read this, for cancer is killing me and I feel the need to warn you about a place called Antamarina. After reading my true story, you won't be able to forget it, it'll become a part of you, like it has happened to me. It occurred not long ago. The name of my boyfriend was Louis. He was an extraordinary man.
Please, I beg you read this and share my unfortunate experience with anyone who's around you right now. This is something thatcould encounter you.
It all started on a bright autumn afternoon that I drowned in the immensity of his eyes, for the first time in two weeks (due to our daily activities, we couldn't get together sooner to discuss life events). The sun coloured everything brown with the leaves on the ground, the naked trees and a soft breeze that showed the last summer's warmth. A breeze that seemed to bring us closer. A breeze that felt as if it were the last one.
We spoke about life, our plans, feelings; in other words: about everything. Our talk was beautiful, listening to his voice felt like water running through my body. His touch was warm, full of passion, love and protection. As for the depression I used to have, it felt long gone, though it was the first time that I was able to speak with him about life in this planet; all it took for us to fall in love, was seeing into each other's eyes, some silly smiles and smelling the odour that our bodies expelled. People around us continued with their daily routine, ignoring our presence; we didn't care about others. I felt renewed inside; before I had met him, it seemed as if some supernatural force had been living with the pleasure of my sufferings, growing stronger and stronger. It all appeared to be close to perfect (for, perfection is nothing but an imaginary mental state, where we happen to believe things that might occur in a parallel universe). Our moments weren't touched by that glimmer of eternity, but we didn't feel any difference; our minds were intensely immersed and entangled, in a way that had occurred to us in one of the other many universes; therefore, we didn't feel any difference in the taste of each meeting we had.
I might say that it all kept going for some few weeks (I lose any sense of time in this world, but I could say that three weeks was the length of our relationship ), I know it doesn't seem like much time, but we had met each other in the parallel universe n° 3113. Don't worry if you haven't been there, it's nothing but a replica of this one and all the other universes that you might imagine (they look different in our brains but they are not: once you arrive, you see everything in the same way, what changes is the outcome of our actions). So, going back to the aspect of time in this world: our planet Earth; we had known each other for a short period of time, but lived loads of exciting moments together.
It all lasted until we decided to go to what looked like an abandoned house. You see, we had the idea of making love in a place like that: something old and that could probably be haunted (do not ask me why, we all have those exciting wishes that make our blood boil). So there we went, feeling impervious to any external force that might alter our internal environment or external appearance.
Of course you are already acquainted with the process of making love, I will avoid getting into detail, that's not what matters. The house was dimly lit, everything seemed to be falling apart, it smelled of moisture and dead leaves (aside from what you might think, the scenery was too f*****g arousing!). We were in the middle of that elating exchange of energies when, all of a sudden, we heard something close to us whispering what follows . . .

From his belly-button, maggots will squirm,
Ugly cockroaches will run from his pure mouth,
Crawling, snails will come out of his eye-sockets,
Keen thoughts will cause you cancer, so: think less.

Our bodies hardened. I felt his body stiffening against mine, it was like having the weight of a thousand corpses, suffocating me. I couldn't move. His eyes were fixed on something. A strong smell of rotten flesh seemed to be walking towards us, step after cautious step, towards me. Towards us.
Somehow, a wave of electricity seemed to lighten up my body, like a light-bulb being turned on. I grabbed the unconscious body of Louis, as if it hadn't been that heavy, and put it aside. That strong smell kept crawling up my nose and penetrated the walls of my lungs, finding a home on my alveoli. I wondered what I could possibly do for it to quit residing in my body, it was like cancer itself. After kissing the lips of my darling, I got up, feeling weightless, as if nothing had happened, as if that smell had become mine; as if it had been mine since my birth in this world.
The entrance hall was gloomy, I could see nothing but a shape that suggested a ghostly sculpture. Its shape was that of a human, from my distance, it looked too perfect to be human. That smell was stronger than ever; it didn't seem to come from the statue. Or was it a statue?
