![]() Chapter OneA Chapter by Alice ReihtBramblekit yawned, stretching her front paws as the early morning sun shone through the gaps in the leaves in the roof of the nursery. The soft whispers of dawn danced through the nursery as Bramblekit stirred from her nest of moss and leaves. She could feel the excitement bubbling in her chest as she knew today was the day she would be apprenticed. The whispers from the night before had not gone unnoticed, but she was determined to prove herself to the clan. As she padded out into the clearing, she spotted Sootypaw, his eyes shimmering with excitement. "Bramblekit!" Sootypaw called out, bounding over to her. "Today's the day!" The two kits played a quick game of tag, their laughter echoing through the early morning. It was moments like these that made Bramblekit feel a true part of Creekclan. Despite the whispers, she had friends, a home, and now a chance to become a warrior. Sootypaw leapt over a low branch, and Bramblekit darted after him, their paws barely touching the dew-kissed grass. "I can't wait to see who you get!" Sootypaw panted as they paused to catch their breath. Bramblekit felt a pang of nervousness. "I hope it's someone who can teach me everything I need to know." "Don't worry," Sootypaw reassured her with a nudge. "You're one of the bravest cats I know. You'll be amazing, no matter what." Their play was interrupted by the call to gather for the naming ceremony. As they raced towards the fallen oak, Bramblekit couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation. Would she be accepted? Would she find her place in the clan? As the dawn air grew warmer, the whispers of the clan grew louder, filling Bramblekit's ears with anticipation. She watched as Foxpelt stepped back, her eyes shimmering with a mix of pride and something else - a hint of sadness that Bramblekit couldn't quite understand. The cream leader, Palestar, took the center of the gathering, her tail flicking with excitement. "Bramblekit," Palestar's voice boomed through the clearing, "today is the day you become Bramblepaw." There was a scattered applause, but the silence that quickly followed it sent a small shiver of embarrassment through the young she-cat. What if my mentor doesn’t want me? The thought dashed through her mind like a forest rabbit. A soft brush of fur on her side alerted her of Sootypaw’s presence beside her. He smiled, Bramblepaw returning the gesture, before turning back to Palestar. “Your mentor will be Redfang.” Palestar continued, nodding to the white and ginger warrior. He walked up to her, his warm smile spreading to her as they touched noses. He was a close friend of Foxpelt; Bramblepaw wondered if Foxpelt had ensured that he would be with Brambelpaw.”Redfang, you are a noble and brave warrior. I should hope you will pass down everything you have learned to this apprentice.” “Of course,” Redfang turned to their leader. “I’m sure she’ll be a fast learner, and a great warrior.” I hope you’re right. Bramblepaw silently wondered. Palestar gazed down at the two for a moment, before looking up to the rest of the clan. “Before you continue for patrols and hunting, I would like a patrol along the Nightclan border. Would anyone join me?” A few cats volunteered, Palestar nodding. “Very well. We’ll leave at sunhigh.” She then turned from her perch, and the rest of the clan spread out. Sootypaw bumped her side with a grin. “How does it feel?” He laughed, his green eyes twinkling. Bramblepaw purred at him, pressing her muzzle against his flank. “Good, I suppose.” She smiled as Foxpelt trotted up behind him. Her ginger pelt gleamed in the sunlight as she let out a proud purr. “Congratulations, my little one.” Foxpelt said as she gave Bramblepaw’s forehead a gentle lick. “I’m so proud.” Bramblepaw grinned, touching noses gently with her mother’s own. “Thank you, Foxpelt. I-” Her voice was cut off as Foggypelt hissed his entrance. “Foxpelt.” He growled as he and the she-cat met eyes. There was a flash of hatred in Foxpelt’s eyes, one that Bramblepaw had seen many times. “Palestar wants you to join us on the patrol. And your apprentice as well.” He gestured towards Sootypaw, before whipping around with a snort. Foxpelt scowled, before turning back to Bramblepaw. “I’ll see you tonight, my kit.” She meowed, giving her another gentle lick on the head before nudging Sootypaw along with her. “So, what now?” Bramblepaw turned eagerly to her mentor, eyes shining. Redfang chuckled, brushing her shoulder with his tail before bouncing off towards the creek. This was Bramblepaw’s favorite place in camp; the stream trickling through the clan home, ferns draping over the ledges and kits splashing in the shallows. Redfang led her to the Wall, a tall, rocky wall that overhung the deeper parts of the creek. “Ready for your first lesson?” He meowed with a smile. Bramblepaw nodded eagerly, gently dipping her paw into the water before jumping into the shallows. She couldn’t help but giggle as the cool water rushed over her fur, the rock below her paws rocking slightly as she shifted her feet. “Okay, first, let’s practice your movement. Try running along those ledges.” He nodded to the jutted out rocks covered in pine straw and leaves. Bramblepaw nodded, hopping up to the closest ledge, shifting her paws so that she was standing on all her feet. She took a cautious leap, gasping as a clump of dirt tumbled into the water below. She glanced back at Redfang, who watched with a reassuring smile. She looked back to the next ledge, taking a deep breath and leaping onto it. This time she landed with her feet more center, and ran over the next few jut-outs. However, the fourth time didn’t end as well. The ledge gave out from under her, and she yelped as she went tumbling down into the water. © 2025 Alice ReihtReviews
