A Chapter by Alice Reiht

SHIP 75353 "SKELD"

Crew Count: 10

Last Earth Contact: 2 Months

_______________________________________________________________________

The metallic doors slide open in front of you. As you walk into the cafeteria, the other crewmates send you a shocked then annoyed glare. Your presence seems to disgust most of them, yet you don't know why.

There are nine other crewmates; Arkose, a small SandWing;  Navy, a burly, engineer SeaWing; Shadebrush, a deep green LeafWing who's Navy’s closest accomplice and possible girlfriend; Achemon, a tall, magenta and cream SilkWing; Quail, a strong female MudWing with matching emerald earrings and a sarcastic tone; Coal, the head medic of your ship, a stocky NightWing; Thrip, a nimble, bright orange and black HiveWing; Mirror, a pale silver IceWing as light as the moons; Micah, a blood-red SkyWing, the captain of your ship; and you, Avis, a yellow-green RainWing.

Quail rolls her eyes as Arkose, being her friendly self, scoots over just enough so that you can sit down next to her at the large table with the humming red button in the middle. Micah clears his throat before speaking.

"Ahem," he begins, typing on a glowing screen in front of him. "Day 62 of our journey. Updates to report?"

Coal shifts his wings with a grunt. "Everyone's overall health status is stable. I may recommend an addition to some of our sleeping schedules, on the behalf of mental health."

Achemon nods, flipping their tail over their talons. "As per usual, everyone must take vitamins and a vitality scan."

Micah nods. "Of course. Navy, reports on the engines and exterior." He turns to the deep blue SeaWing.

"The engines are stable and in no need of repair." She says. "The exterior hull is strong, however, there may be a small vent in need of repair near engine three. I will attend further notice when I can."

Your captain lightly snorts a puff of smoke. "Mirror, reports on electricity matters?"

Mirror stretches his neck, pale grey scales gleaming. "Nothing out of the ordinary."

Micah clears his throat once again. "Well, you all proceed to your tasks. Thrip, see me."

Thrip, Micah's co-pilot, nods, follows him away towards Storage and Admin. The other crewmates depart their separate ways. No one takes a second glance to you, but eventually, Arkose pops her head back in from lower hall.

"Do-do you want to come with us?" She nods towards the hallway, which heads towards MedBay and the Engines.

You shrug, following along. You suddenly stagger back, a stinging pain shooting through your head. You clutch your head helplessly, groaning in pain. Arkose turns around, gasps, before shooting back towards you. You hear her followed by hurried, heavy talons, so perhaps Coal, or Quail.

"Avis!" Arkose exclaims, her tone anxious as she spastically hovers her talons around you, unsure what to do.

"Ah-AHH!" You groan back, still clutching your head. Suddenly the pain stops. Completely dissipated, like it was never there. You shakily stand up, Arkose placing a warm talon on your arm. "W-Weird." You whisper.

"Hey," Coal says, a slightly worried tone in his smooth voice. "Duck your head. It looks like something's on it."

You obey his orders, feeling him touch a large talon on the back of your head. "Strange," he mumbles, but loud enough to hear. Then speaking in a louder, clearer voice. "It's all wet and slimy, like something was on there. When we arrive at MedBay, let me sanitize it, and you may need to be detoxicated."

You nod, the three of you continuing down the hall. As you proceed through the ship, you are completely unaware of the strange, pink goop that just absorbed itself into your scales.

You are completely unaware of everything you are about to do.
