Pins and Needles

Pins and Needles

A Poem by Alice Mumble

Every day, I sit on pins and needles.
"Don't do this,"
they tell me.
"Not like that,"
they scold me.
"This is a time to smile,
this is a time to mourn."
"Do not laugh here.
Do not frown there.
Sit up straight.
Relax.
Eat.
You eat too much.
Gain some weight
Loss some weight
Get a job
Take a break
Have some respect
Don't be so cold
Don't be so familiar
Dress Up
Be normal
Stand out
Be quiet
It's neither the time nor the place
neither here nor there-"
"Tell me!
Where is here? Where is there?
When will it be time? Where is the place?
If I cannot smile here, can I frown?
If I can't eat, can I starve?
If I can't write, can I scream?
If I can't laugh, can I cry?
If I can't breathe, should I drown?"
When is it enough? When is it enough? When is it enough"
...
Tell me,
When is it enough?"
