Ordinary DoorA Poem by Alice MumbleWould You Open It?
If there was a door,
a wooden door with a bronze knob, would you open it? What if I told you it was an ordinary door? There is no magical incantation or metaphorical key to unlock it. Just one half-turn of the knob and its open. Behind the door is an ordinary room with a single window. Is this window special? Does it overlook a bustling city street or peer into some bum filled alley-way? -No. Beyond the glass, there is no enchanted forest or flowery meadow filled with sunflowers and monarchs. It's facing a meaningless building, which the sun barely peers over. Do you still want to open the door? There will be no revelation, or sudden enlightenment. It will just be an open door. It really is just an ordinary door, that leads to an ordinary room, with an ordinary window, overlooking an insignificant sight. So insignificant that the window has been neglected and become covered in fog-like dust, that covers the ground and and paints the floor. The paint is peeling off the ceiling, and the floor boards have begun to creak. The scurrying of a mouse would resemble the rattling of a casket. Not that it matters, since neither mouse nor man enters. The abandoned knob has aged, but I know it will turn still. So, if their was such a door, an ordinary wooden door, that leads to aged room, with dust covered window overlooking an insignificant sight would you open it? No promise of insight or clarity, no path to nirvana or home, would you open it? With that he answered, "Yes, I would."
