2015’s bridal gown trends, unveiled

Eye-catching details, back interest, bridal bling and fashion-forward silhouettes are just some of the chic elements that bring the wow factor to spring 2015 wedding gowns.

“Overall the biggest trend right now is how quickly sportswear is influencing bridal. The same trends women are wearing every day” are translating to the wedding dress market, and that “equals some interesting and unique assortments,” said Lori Conley, bridal buyer for David’s Bridal.

“The unconventional bride will stepping out of the box” and walking down the aisle in gowns with crop tops or jumpsuits, Conley said. These fashion-forward looks aren’t for everyone, but “they are creeping into the bridal scene,” she said.

Front to back

While brides look to celebrities for inspiration, wearing an original gown and showing off personal style is a top priority for today’s brides.

“The biggest trend is that every bride wants an absolutely unique dress and insists on making some changes to every gown. She may change something as simple as the neckline, or she may completely choose a different fabric or different color,” said Terry Hall, fashion director at Kleinfeld Manhattan.

A red carpet style that makes a great entrance but also looks fantastic from every angle is another must-have for today’s brides, Conley said.

One way they’re making that happen is through “back story”: An array of detailed backs from racers and T-straps to keyholes, lace tattoos and plunging backs bring a wow factor.

“Today’s brides are a bit older, and they are demonstrating their willingness to show off their own style. They want to be unique and are willing to take risks,” Conley said.

Necklines and detail

Glamour is in vogue, and “brides are opting for detail in unique ways, from interesting designs within a fabric to unique embellishments and plunging necklines,” Hall said. “Tone-on-tone beading and gowns with shimmer detail are in.”

Brides are bringing the bling in intricate dresses with an abundance of dimensional floral appliqués, heavily beaded bodices and all-over mixed-media fabrications, Conley said. They’re clamoring to look like Amal Clooney on their big day, with dimensional florals, linear embellishments and off-the-shoulder necklines, Conley said.

These intricate styles featuring a variety of mixed-media fabrications and champagne-hued detailing make a regal statement.

Illusion necklines add a sense of coverage with a bit of suggestive exposure.

“They’re flattering but still sexy and allow a woman to wear undergarments,” Conley said.

Playing with hem length

Shorter bridal dresses may seem unusual but are right on the money for a number of reasons.

“First you can wear a killer pair of shoes and show them off,” Conley said. “They’re practical, too, with many people getting married in unconventional places like a barn or in a meadow. They’re comfortable and easy to dance in.”

Brides combine the best of both long and short with convertible dresses that equal “two very different looks in one,” Hall said. “It is an exciting reveal to the guests as the dresses aren’t obviously convertible. Once the overskirt is removed, a sexy sheath is revealed,” he said.

The princess ballgown is a fan favorite, but it’s not for every bride. Gowns with collapsed-volume skirts made of softer fabrications in tulle and organza are popular with women who don’t want the dress to wear them. These gowns feature minimal construction and shorter trains.

Color

Sometimes a bride’s fashion sense is best expressed through color, Hall said.

In the bridal world, that refers to hues or a color or softer, more muted tones such as blush, powder blue, lavender, celadon and mocha.

“However, there is the occasional bride who wants to wear true color and shows up on her big day in red or even black,” he said.

While ivory has taken over from true white as the most popular color choice, blush and champagne are the new normal, Conley said.
