See all six of Solange Knowles’ knock-out wedding outfitsA Story by Alice GunsonSee all six of Solange Knowles’ knock-out wedding outfitsSolange Knowles pulled no punches with her knockout wedding weekend attire. Beyoncé’s ultrahip baby sister wore a series of six avant-garde outfits in shades of ivory and alabaster to her marriage festivities in New Orleans. And in the process, the fashion champ pulled off the most seriously stylish wedding since, well, George and Amal Clooney’s September nuptials. Like the new Mrs. Clooney, Knowles changed her designer ensembles for every event. But in contrast to the British barrister’s colorful Venice celebration, this Big Easy bash was art directed in 50 shades of soothing white. Take the wedding portraits by Bronx-based photographer Rog Walker, showing the carefully posed wedding party in immaculate garb. They looked like they were torn from the pages of a fashion magazine " and you’d never guess that the bride broke out in hives after the reception. “That they all celebrated the joy of the marriage in white was, to me, beautiful and powerful,” says Mary Alice Stephenson, style expert and founder of Glam4Good. “It’s basically breaking every wedding rule in the book,” she adds, referring to the old saw about not overshadowing the bride by wearing the same color. “It really shakes things up and gives women out there who are getting married more options. It will probably start a new trend.” Knowles’ wedding dress itself was a study in unadulterated chic. The couple rented out the movie theater on Friday night for a screening of the 1975 Diana Ross film “Mahogany.” Cocktails and daiquiris were reportedly served to guests. Right: On Saturday, Solange wore the first of three outfits by designer Stéphane Rolland " a daring, off-the-shoulder one-legged jumpsuit " to the couple’s Saturday night rehearsal dinner. The festivities also included a dance party hosted by DJ Soul Sister, which was attended by guests such Beyonce and Jay Z, according to reports. She accessorized her look with wide gold cuffs by Jill for Lady Grey and left her hair gloriously natural. Her handsome groom wore a bone-colored Lanvin suit. “There was a superhero quality to [the wedding gown], but it was really elegant and simple,” says Joe Zee, celebrity stylist and editor-in-chief of Yahoo Style. “I loved it.” “I thought it was exactly how a modern bride should look today,” adds Stephenson. Others found it a bit derivative. “It’s kind of a Tom Ford knockoff,” says celebrity stylist Logan Horne, referring to thewhite dress and cape that Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the 2012 Oscars. “I feel like if you’re going to have something custom-made, it should be different and unusual. She did look gorgeous, though.” Modal Trigger Post wedding, guests like Beyoncé and Jay Z danced in the streets with a brass band. Photo: Josh Brasted/WireImage While she covered up at the ceremony, Knowles showed serious skin before and after in three edgy outfits by French designer Stéphane Rolland. Accompanied by her hubby-to-be, she arrived on a rose-festooned bike at her wedding venue, the Marigny Opera House, in Rolland’s cleavage-baring, open-backed, caped jumpsuit from the winter 2012 collection. Couturier Rolland, reached in Paris, praised Knowles’ fashion daring. “She’s audacious,” he says. “She takes risks, but they’re always very studied. She likes her style to be very strong, very pure, very graphic. And she would never betray a designer’s style.” As for Knowles’ revealing neckline, Rolland says it was anything but indecent. “She’s never vulgar, never. If she wants an open [style], it’s maybe because her fiancé loves it. If he wants his wife to be sexy, why not?” Knowles’ other Rolland-designed get-ups were even more outrageous. She flew her freak flag in an asymmetrical one-legged jumpsuit with a sheer overlay at her Saturday night rehearsal dinner. After the ceremony on Sunday, the ebullient bride paraded through the streets in a deep-plunge jumpsuit with a fluttering cape. Both were from Rolland’s summer 2014 collection. “Why does a wedding have to be not sexy?” asks Stephenson. “A wedding day should be how you think you look your best. Who made those rules?” “I think I just finally started having good sex,” Solange Knowles told the London Evening Standard in 2012. It was a cheeky admission of how happy she was in her relationship with video director Alan Ferguson. Solange’s 51-year-old husband first made a splash with, as irony would have it, his future brother-in-law Jay Z. Ferguson directed the rapper’s early videos “Who You Wit” and “Feelin’ It” in 1997. But Ferguson’s breakthrough didn’t come until years later. “He really made a name for himself after directing half a dozen videos for Fall Out Boy,” says Tamar Anitai, managing editor for MTV News. In particular, the promos for the Chicago emo-rock band’s “Dance, Dance” (2005) and “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” (2007) were big hits on MTV and online, leading to further work in the shape of Katy Perry’s 2008 “Hot n Cold” clip. While Ferguson was making it big in the music-video world, Solange was shedding her first beau, Daniel Smith. The two separated in 2007 and, soon after, Solange and Ferguson started dating. The pair were first spotted publicly at an art gallery in 2008. “I was the one who approached him,” she told Web site necolebitchie.com last year. Solange and Ferguson rented out New Orleans’ Indywood theater Friday night to screen the 1975 Berry Gordy-directed movie “Mahogany,” starring Diana Ross, for their friends and family. Hayley Simpson, the theater’s co-owner, told the Post they had bonded over the flick on their second date. “Solange had fallen ill with a cold. He brought over three movies for her to choose from and some tea and she chose ‘Mahogany’.” Ferguson’s career has certainly not been hurt by the Knowles’ connections. Beyoncé tapped him to co-direct the racy film-noir clip for “Dance for You” in 2011. When it helped both of them win video director of the year at the 2012 BET Awards, Ferguson saluted the love of his life from the stage, calling Solange his “inspiration.” See also: formal dresses online© 2014 Alice Gunson |
