Civilization

Civilization

A Poem by Laura Pruett

Falling stars riddle the pale sky -

We can't see them anymore.

Our eyes have lost their focus;

Only the light of self-indulgence remains

A darker blackness than that pitch

Of which men spoke of yore

Pierces not that so-called divine light

That emanates from within

Beware, oh my people,

Those who would claim humanity

As something more than a race

Of slavering dogs or ravenous beasts

For this is the fall of civilization,

This senseless conceit,

This belief that we, as humans,

Are entitled to something more

We are merely animals,

And this, we should not forget...

All animals live,

And having lived, they die
