Hope Springs Eternal

Hope Springs Eternal

A Poem by Laura Pruett

He comes in slamming doors,
Yelling, griping, hating me
I don’t know why
Or what I did

And do I yell at him, berate him?
No, instead I cut him to the quick
With my wittiness and guile;
He stands no chance

I don’t think this is mine
Or his…the blame for what we are…
Sometimes two people shouldn’t be,
That’s all

It takes two to tango
And we both dance poorly
He steps on my feet
And I try to lead

Doomed from the start, I suppose
We built this on such a shaky foundation
And yet I thought I was strong enough
I am not

Though perhaps we started this out poorly
Without anything like forethought
I believe that we can end it well
For our son

Life is difficult all around
And things are tough all over
But there’s a light at the end of the tunnel
And I see it
