There's currently TBC Classic and Classic Era (Vanilla). They are separate clients. Presently, creating a character in one won't be available on the other. The version that you're currently working with is the one that you first used.

They updated the "Classic" client that was previously available from TBC for the initial transition from Vanilla to TBC. They introduced "Classic Era" as a download option, and made the change. All characters were transferred to "Classic Era", and both the "current" and "Classic Era" versions were deactivated. Then, you had to choose which copy you wanted to activate which would lock you out of using the other one (the majority of people were able to activate the TBC version).

What if Blizzard did not release TBC Instead, they released an expansion that was based on the foundations built in vanilla? There are foundations that include neutral pvp areas, battlegrounds and a chat room called "LocalDefense" (I was having trouble getting into it since I didn't know the exact spelling) Factions, factions, other things.

The expansion I'm thinking of is a real battle between alliance and horde, where you fight over neutral areas to win control of azeroth. While controlling a zone you have access to more quests and flight paths. When attacking a region, you can earn specific quests to help your side gain control back for that zone. Instead of having to take on 10 raptors and then level to maximum level, you could be a part of the battle. Once you have taken charge of a territory, you'll get new quests to ensure control. the area changes depending the faction that controls the zone. Horde is controlling it? Alliance only has two outposts. The Alliance must be moved slowly. World pvp mixed with NPC's fighting with players and NPC's. Ressource transportations for different zones and protecting them from the faction of the enemy.
