That's the way we beganA Poem by Alexander143True story of how I met Natasha, my current girlfriend.Distant conversations that disintegrated to low noises as soon as they hit the closed door of my half occupied dorm, Indistinct sounds, from surrounding rooms. Loud chants and faded chatters. In great discomfort, I turned in a bed that seemed both too small and also too big. I was bored, and worsening it all, were my housemates' disturbing hearty laughters. It was 11pm, on another one of September's hot nights in 2011; So lifeless. The night that kept maturing seemed to have had no intentions of dying. A few words tossed here and there between my best friend and I, hardly a conversation. But, that's all I could exchange with a wonderful friend who was studying. Left. Right. Left. Right. A few more turns and I'd had it. There had to be something, anything, I could do. A long stare at the ceiling. Moths dancing around the flourcent tube. The steady glare of the tube's cool light. Then I got something! I was going to pick my phone and call someone. A girl. But who? First things first, and on this occasion, first cut first. 'My Love'... I said, inaudibly, as I scrolled though my contact list... Silently. My phone fixed to my ear, I waited for the sound of her voice...But the operator tone was all I got. A few more numbers in vain, and, I was getting pissed. 'Mas!' I called my best friend and dorm mate. 'Yes,' he had no interest in chit-chatting, apparently. 'I have to talk to a girl tonight. Bridget's line is off. Can you help me with any number?' 'Uhmmm...try this one, 0978784286. Her name is Angela, but make no mention of me.' 'No problem,' I hit the keypad, '...286, call!' 'The mobile subscriber you have dialed...' I needen't no further clarification. Frustrated, I ended the call. 'Dude, the line's off. Any other number?' I just had to talk to a girl. Any girl. 'Sorry man, I left my sim card at home. That's where my numbers are. Hers is the only one I could recall. 'This can't be! I will talk to a girl tonight!' I thought out loud. Another search through my contacts, as though some magic would add a girl's number. But, no. Magic lives only around snow white and Peter Pan. I tossed my phone on my bed, held my head, and even if I knew not, I tried hard to remember. All doors closed. My head closed. I was choiceless. Bored. Agitated and I couldn't about take it. A cool breeze rushed through the only window of our room to break the monotony of the suffocating heat. It forced me to relax. To breathe, calmly. In quite. My tension eased, as the breeze massaged my body. My mind opened. I kept breathing, slowly, deeply. Then it hit me! Why didn't I think about this? 'Mainga,' I commanded his attention, 'I've got it!' 'You've got a number? Great, call it.' he was always collected. 'No! Not a number. A way to get a number! We'll guess a number and call it.' Slowly, he looked up, away from his book, 'You're crazy right?' he was not nearly excited. 'I mean think about it, it's more fun. A stranger means I get to put my game on a test drive.' He kept staring at me, without producing a single word. 'Here's what we do; I think of the code, you think of the first three digits and I, the last three.' 'Alright.' is that what he said? Whatever, absurd or eccentric, I would still have carried on, irrespective of what I'd have heard. I still can't remember the first two numbers. Anyways, they were random compounds, who would. But not so the reactions. The first was a deja vu. 'The mobile subscriber...' Nobody listens to recording if they know their end. The second attempt was to a mobile user who knew neither how to turn off it's phone, nor pick it up when it rung. The third time, however, was magical... 'Okay, one more time.' I said, loosing my vigor. '0978...' '145...' my loyal companion responded. '625...' I sealed the deal and pressed 'send.' Ring ring... Ring ring... Ring ring... I crossed my fingers. 'Pick up. Pick up.' I whispered. As though a joke of a dream... 'Hello...' The voice on the other end of the line was so beautiful that it sacred all the words out of me. 'I'm getting this one,' I thought. 'Hey. This is Jack.' I replied. 'Uh huh...' she was so simple that she made me realize that in my complexity, I had no words to utter, completely. In the confusion of wordlessness, I managed to produce a few, 'Why does this sound like I'm talking to a wrong person?' I was sure to get away with that one. But no, I did not, 'Who did you expect to talk to?' she asked, slowly, with her sweet and intimidating voice. Then I knew that my doom was close. I would lose the girl if I knew not, how to hold on. 'I just got this number from someone.' I was sure that those words were more random than the number. 'That's not the problem. The thing is, who did you want to talk to?' This is it. Unless I behave smart, I will seriouly lose the girl I've not got yet. 'You know, the person who gave me this number did not give me your name, but said alot of nice things about you and recommended that I talk to you.' I listened to every word as it came out of my mouth, this is it. Damn! I'm one heck of a slick man! A few seconds and I made my first step, 'Care to share your name?' I asked the stranger with the beautiful voice. 'I'm Natasha...' That was it. That's how we began. Keep Smiling © 2012 Alexander143Reviews
