The Dark

It's sorta a intro to a book I'm trying to write

“RETREAT”
Jacob's voice, although bold, was quickly drowned out in the sea of madness.
From the top of the dusty wagon he could see his friends fighting a losing battle. He thought they were ready. He thought he was ready.
But all the training and preparation was nothing compared to the waves after waves of strangers crashing.. grabbing..
He saw one try to scurry up the side of the wagon with it's disgusting diseased knees, it's face peeling off.
Jacob swung with his hatchet, it's blade embedding in the hideous face with a spray of dark blood. The stranger collapsed with a thump.
“HOW MANY?!” Jacob screamed at his lieutenant Ju.
“I think about a dozen left.” Ju replied with a starched voice.
One dozen.
Out of the forty or so heavily supplied troops they lead in, only 12 remained.
Across the lot he saw one of his closest friends, Gabe, shoot at a stranger with a revolver. The blood splattered on his musty jacket.
Gabe turned around at another stranger behind him and fired. The bullet clipped it's torso and it paused. Gabe fired again. He missed. A stranger with a missing arm shuffled from behind and bumped into Gabe’s shoulder. He went down in a huddle of strangers, biting his jacket, clawing for an opportunity to find flesh. “AAAGHhhh…..” his scream died in is throat as one of his oldest friends was taken by the darkness.
11.
Jacob looked around and saw two of his friends, Mason and Kate, back to back dicing the ever nearing strangers. Mason was short and thin and he had a stained bicycle helmet as well as arm pads and a thick coat. He wielded a pistol and a long knife. Kate was lean and had short hair. She had a t-shirt and some football armor. She also had a now broken machete.
The pistol had ran out of ammo and lay on the bloody pavement.
Mason tried to swing but the shovel was ripped out of his arm by a stranger.
Defenseless, he shoved Kate in front of him to distract them as he dove under the wagon.
Kate was slow to react and soon found herself shoved in a mob.
She stabbed the nearest creature with the end of the machete and it stuck between the exposed ribs. Useless.
She scrambled back a meter before being bit in the neck by a heavy stranger. She struggled and swung her lean arms and pounded the things face in, shredding its diseased face with her nails.
But it was no use. She was stuck fast as the stranger sank his cracked, bloody teeth closer and closer towards Kate's throat.
Kate died screaming as the stranger found her mark and she too, was taken by darkness.

This seems like a good horror story. As well as suspenseful.

Suggestion: Space out your paragraphs more. It makes it easier on the readers eyes. Also, give some background on these characters. What is Kate like? Where is she from? How did they all get here? Are they all friends?

I think you can make a good book out of this. You're going somewhere with this, keep up the good work.
