Calypso's LamentA Poem by Cpt. Alex RoverInspired by the story of Calypso from greek mythology and contemporary literature of the same typeEvery night I go out. All my life I’ve been seeing stars And I always wait.
The falling ones still sparkle as they tumble
out of the sky And they still shine in the mud Briefly lighting up the dark
I pick them up, one by one Wipe them off, wash them And with a peck on the cheek, I throw them
back to the sky
Every time, as they fly back They wave and shed tears of sparkling joy Then resume their place, lighting up the sky
So every night I go out All my life I’ve been seeing stars And I always wait.
But sometimes I wonder, Staring out at this dark, lonely place If I should have kept one,
Just one star, to light up the gloom. But the last one dropped a golden tear And it still shines at night.
So I’ll place it beside my bed It will light up this gloom And so I’ll smile.
And every night I’ll go out For all my life I’ll be seeing stars And I’ll keep on waiting
