Half of an Old Woman's Story

Half of an Old Woman's Story

A Poem by Alex J

It’s a story being told in

French and I can’t make out

the specifics. A woman, abducted by the

circus is crying. From what I understand,

through the sobs and drunken clowns

is that her father gave her two francs and she

lost them. He’s an artist, possibly a bad one

and she’s ashamed of her mistakes

and her birthday dress is torn at the hem

and soon the Germans              here

and soon her handsome French angles

and soon the gas and soon the fire

will tear through her             the men will

have no shoes like she saw in her dream,

and one will light a cigarette, she sees him

without making a sound, or the other way round

both in full ceremonial dress,

rags     head down     iron cross

like old age who tells her grandchildren

about the mud, and the man who held

a finger to his lips and left it there
