Into the Night (Alex)

Into the Night (Alex)

A Chapter by Alex Crow

I run from Shane, he just hurt Ron and Jane and I'm next I think as I run into a thick forest. If I get up into one of the trees he'll never find me. If he is following me he's gone now, I'm in too deep for him to hunt for me tonight. I scaled the tree and sat on the branch. Finally as I get comfortable the wind blew and I think I’m going to freeze. A hard blow nearly snaps the branch next to me off.

A voice from the branch next to me speaks. "It's getting cold out here, you should go inside." It's Shane sitting right next to me, a terror fills my heart again. I jump down and sprint away. How did he find me? I stop to look behind me and hold the tree for balance because I'm too tired to run away again.

"You really should rest and stop running from me, I won't hurt you." Shane is behind me yet again.

"Leave me alone!" I scream as I try to run.

He stops me, "I'm sick of this game," and then he holds my hands behind my back and tells me to walk. "You know it really is a beautiful night,” Shane says releasing my hands.

"I guess," I say looking at my captor.

"Look Alexis I'm going to be blunt here this 'why should I listen to you' act is old. I'll tell you everything I know if you'll listen to me and not think that I'm crazy."

I think for a second and search his face; he actually wants someone to talk to. "I'll make no promises about thinking you're crazy, but I'll listen."

"There's a war going on between the goblins and the vampires and the slayers are split in quarters. There are those of us who just want to be left alone but both governments won't leave us. Those who want to take the side of the goblins and those who want to take the side of the vampires. And then there are slayers like me who have been forced to do whatever the king says."

"We don't have kings anymore; monarchies have died out over the past two centuries."

"It's not the fact that he would be a king that I have to listen to him. It's... Never mind let me show you." Shane pulls the sleeve of his shirt up to his forearm, it was covered in scars, but there was an insignia on his forearm. It was a black bird with blood red flames around its body. "What happened? I ask touching the bird on his arm. The brand seemed to have triggered one of my many lost memories from my amnesia. All I was saw this bird and blood running down an arm.

"This is the mark of the royal family; I was the first born son of King Vladimir. Unfortunately I was born a slayer, just like you. At that time period in time slayers were enslaved and so I have the mark of the royals, but this brand names me as a servant to the royal family."

"Wait...so whose ruling the kingdom if you're here?"

"My younger brother Eric, he had taken over about two hundred years ago.

"I'm sorry to ask this but, do humans know about this insignia because I've seen it somewhere before."

"No, this is strictly off limits to any humans and tattoo shops. If a human is seen with anything close to this they're taken before the Council of Elders to have their fate decided."

"I feel like I've seen it before." Shane rolls his sleeve back down.

"You have, you use to see it all the time when you were young. I use to be friends with your mother, father and grandmother."

"What happened?"

"Your mom got too busy for everything, your father was killed in battle and I see your grandmother once a month, we play cards, checkers and Battleship."

"Oh, I don't remember you. I'm sorry; after I got hit by a car when I was 8 I lost all of my memories of being a little kid. "

We’ve reach the truck, I trust Shane a little more, but not enough that I wouldn’t run again if I was given the chance. He pulls Jane out and takes her with us, Ronan is still extremely asleep. We walk up into a triangular shape camp with a building in the middle. Mine and Jane's bags were heavy on my shoulder as we walked into one of the three cabins. We walk inside, straight until we hit the end, there are two doors, we walked into the one of the right and he laid Jane down on the top bunk. "Would you mind unpacking her things while I go get Ronan?" Shane asks standing at the door.

"How do you know I won't run again?" I laugh setting the bags down.

He laughs, "Try to open this door from the inside." I try, the second I touch the handle there is a shock that stings all the way up to my shoulder.

"Ow," I say.

"I'll be back soon to make sure you're still in here and since you've helped me and haven’t eaten since lunch I'll take you to get some food."

I toss Jane's clothes into her foot locker and my clothes into my own locker. Shane came back and opens the door for me. "What do you want to eat? We have every kind of meat that is sold in stores and the most cereal brands you've ever seen."

"I don't eat meat, so do you have fruity circles?"

"A vegetarian demon just doesn't sound right to me," he laughs. "Ok let's get the fruity circles."

He sits across from me at the table eating cereal, "do you trust me yet?"

"Considering you're the only adult I've seen here, I guess I have to." I respond slurping the milk. I belch and Shane holds up seven fingers and all I can do is laugh.

"Do you want another?" He laughs watching my emotions die out as I stare at the empty bowl.

I shake my head, "what is this place?" There was a living room next to the kitchen and out the arch were the bedrooms.

"The building or the camp itself?"

"The camp,” I say watching Shane take the bowls and refills them both.

He sets them back on the table, “this is the V.S.E training camp. This is where slayers are taken when they're seventeen. Everyone here has been born into service to the vamperic military.”

"What does V.S.E mean?”

“It means Vamperic Slayer Elite.”

“That sounds very military structured.”

"Unfortunately yes, that’s how the vampires have it set up.”

“I’m sorry, but I can’t be part of a military, I’m not strong enough.”

“You will be by the time you leave here. I’ll make sure when it’s time to send you in for testing you’ll be ready.”

“Testing? What are we being tested on?” I’d drain another bowl of cereal and was full.

“You’re speed, strength, weapons usage, and pain tolerance. Those are what I’m supposed to be teaching you up here.” Shane also drained his bowl; I take them to the sink.

“You can’t teach pain tolerance, strength or speed. “

He laughs at me, “What part of MILITARY training camp don’t you get kiddo?

“Maybe it’s the I in military because it shoots me upward and I haven’t come down yet?”

Shane smiles, “yeah well you’d better come down soon because I’m sending you to bed. You’re going to need your energy for tomorrow when training begins.” Shane disappears into the living room and I walk down the hallway and go to sleep.

I like how the story is going. A bunch of mistakes, I will say that, but with a little tweaking, it will shine. Good work.
