Car Ride To Safford Az

Car Ride To Safford Az

A Poem by Alex Luna

The doors they all slam on the masked

figures that all move so slow toward

the smiling man and the eternally rash

and their holy drawn held fire sword

they hold their mouths back and

the sad little girls all go boo and aw

and moan in the hot El Paso night

neon blinking through musty teeth

and the women all dressed so raw

and the birds all set in their flight

but there is no such thing as a kindness

as most people (with their glittering gold

teeth and small black pea eyes) smile and

nod and still expect you to always know

The women all keep to themselves on the back

of old fishbioats and the sailing trains

headed toward Rome and the trembliing isles

hide your head in your hands and follow them

straight to starlight and salvation

the dust has come

you must pay the sum

for salvation has come
