The election campaign

The election campaign

A Poem by Anima Akuffo
"

Hmmm...African Politics..

"
Hark hark
The clarions bark
The Johns are coming to town
To bicker and twitter, to mutter and flutter
Who then will calm us down

Hark hark
The clarions bark
The beggars are coming to town
The greedy, the needy, the beady, the seedy
All here to run us down

Hark hark
The clarions bark
The dredgers are coming to town
To reduce and confuse, to abuse and misuse
O Lord we're going down

Hark hark
The clarions bark
The hackers are coming to town
To plot and corrupt, to fake what is not
Our hope is all locked down

This is so awesome, especially since we in the US are also mired in a nasty presidential election which consists of almost NOTHING about issues, but as always, personal attacks & so on. Your bouncy, playful, non-serious approach really brings out the ridiculousness of it all. I love the "hark hark, the clarions bark" . . . normally I don't go for repetition, but in this case, it mimics real life, so we have to hear it out, repetitions & all the other nonsense. I also love "the Johns are coming to town" -- altho I understand from your authors note that the names are "John" . . . but in our country, "Johns" are also how we refer to the men who use prostitutes, so this phrase holds double meaning (& very apt reference). I think this is how most of us feel about politicians & their gyrations.

This is about politics in Ghana. The "johns" refer to our past four presidents - each called John. The current one running for president is also called John.
