What Love is Not

What Love is Not

A Poem by Adelina Keith

I was young.
And it was silly
To have thought you cared for me.
You charmed me with your wit,
And I didn’t care a bit
About my father’s warning.

Funny how I never noticed you
Until I thought you cared.
You showered me with gifts.
That’s when things began to shift.
You said I was your only love.
Oh dear, how you deceived me!

Every time without fail
You took advantage of my love
Yet, I welcomed you again.
In my innocence, you deceived me
And polluted my precious purity.

You left my spirit broken
When you left me for another.
Why? I often wonder
My father was right.
I should’ve listened
To his advice.

But I am happy now.
And though I have found love again,
This time of the true and purest form,
I often think of you.
I hope you’re happy and doing well.
Thanks for teaching me
What love is not.

When I read your poem it reminds me of poems that I wrote when I was very young about love..
I enjoyed it and I am glad that you now know what love is not.
Going through the pain is of being deceived is terrible..I know..I have been there.
There are certain words that I am not sure should be in your poem..
Your second line where you say you were a fool is one of them... No, you were not a fool..you were innocent..a believer of love..I think not listening to your fathers warning is such a great part of your poem..
I wonder if you moved your lines around just a bit and removed a few words, if your poem would read just little more smoothly...
Hope I have not offended you..I only am saying this because I relate to your poem.
I have posted several of the poems that I wrote when I was 20 years old ..in 1970 that you might like.
Cry.... is one of them

Love is one thing we are blinded by. It takes others to tell us that our chosen partner may not reciprocate the same feelings for us, as we have for them. Yet we don't believe them, and allow ourselves to be heartbroken. Love is a precious thing, it helps to understand what love is not, and hat the wanting signs are. I enjoyed reading this!

Isn’t it strange how others can see the flaws in those we thought of as the perfect partner before we can? A lovely, true, piece of writing and the last line about teaching what love is not is glorious.
