Springtime In Mississippi

Springtime In Mississippi

A Poem by Adelina Keith

There is nothing like springtime in Mississippi.
The sun shines through the clouds
And soaks into your skin.
A cool breeze rustles the leaves,
And birds sing a happy song.
Dragonflies and bumblebees
Buzz along the bayou.
Purple, white, and yellow flowers
Sprout up from the ground.
No longer is the scenery
Brown and gray with winter sleep.
It is alive and vibrant green
As far as the eye can see.
The mighty Mississippi sparkles
As it reflects the sky.
In this peaceful place,
You know that God is near.
You can feel him in the breeze;
See him in the trees.
And if you look up
Into that great blue sky,
All time shall be still,
And for a moment
Everything will be alright.

Very nice word picture of springtime in the south here. Liked especially the last lines which mention time standing still when you look up into "that great blue sky." Sometimes when you're in a natural setting without the sounds of the city to distract, you can experience such a stillness. It's almost like being in the middle of a meditation.

The beauty in this piece is a gentle, understated kind. This poem does a fantastic job translating the tranquility of the scene and moment into a feeling the reader can absorb, like sunlight soaking into the skin. Normally, descriptive pieces like these have a tendency to include fifty-cent words for the sake of seeming more elaborate, but they tend to stick out like a sore thumb- all the words in this poem seem very well-chosen, and they create a perfect, quiet, spring-like atmosphere. Thank you for submitting this to the " The Piece You're Proudest Of" Contest!

Best,
AM

This is a lovely tone poem of lazy, warm, days spent by the river with the sights and sounds of nature all around you and the sense that you are a part of something greater than yourself.

Very descriptive, reads like a lovely place to be. Enjoyed the read especially the last 8 lines, even though I have no religion in me :))

I really love the imagery in this one. I mean, duh? It's as if the garden of eden had been reflected from your eyes then onto the page. This feels like a song of renewal, happiness. We could all use that. Good work. CD
