An Event of Life

An Event of Life

A Story by AirieLeva

The walls felt like they were closing in, the dim lights were blinding. Whispers floated to me as the shouting of the crowd slowly made their way to me. I blink sharply, trying to see past the flashing lights. Someone handed me a bottle of water; because of the crowd of people, I couldn’t see who it was.

“Thank you,” I say vaguely, throwing it out there for anyone to catch and hold on to, hoping that the words reached the right person’s ears.

A quiet fell over the crowd as the world seemed to slow, a steady drum beat echoed through the air, only reaching my ears. The steady drumming of my racing heart reminding me that there was still something out there. Reminding me that something in this world was still an array of magic, and music, and life.

Far off in the distance the first firework went off, erupting with a boom, showering down in an array of lights.

“Come on,” Cinny yells, running forward, briefly placing a hand on my shoulder.

Grinning I run after her, I can faintly make out Perce and Luke running ahead of us. All around us fireworks explode, a literal definition of magic. The sparks cascading down like a waterfall. Mutt, Kay, Beth and Izzy join us.

Slowly, one by one the rest of our friends fall in line, running beside us, behind us, in front of us. Laughter filled the air, shouts and smiles from one person to another. In those moments the world stills, and there is just now.

This moment, the fireworks lighting up the night, practically raining magic. My friends surrounding me with laughter and smiles. Any soul around can feel the happiness in the air.

“Whoo!” Perce shouts, jumping up and down, throwing his fists in the air.

Boom. Boom. Boom.

Firework after firework, explosion after explosion. It was in these seconds that we found a family.

We found love.

We found peace.

But more importantly we found life.

This story brought back images of my long past. I was 21. We were diving off a ten meter board into a clear water lake yelling silly things like, Double cheeseburger, french fries, BEER!
It was a time of my life I never forgot.
Why it stuck with me all these years I'll never know, but there was a bonding of friends, freedom, great memories.
Enjoy your life and all the great things it throws at you.
Thanks for the trip back in time.
