Lifers

Lifers

A Poem by Ahmad Cox

There are some people
That are stuck in life
That don't know how
To get out of the rut of
The rat race if the door
Was sitting right in front
Of their faces and there
Was a sign saying exit here
Or if their very lives and
Existence depended on them
Rejecting the rat race and
Finding the door for
Themselves they would
Rather eat the poison
And die than live
And be free from
The race of the grind
These people I call lifers
They have a "life" plan
Or "life" goals that they
Want to follow and
They have to follow
The road to success
To make it to the top
Buying into the "life"
Or the American dream
That is toxic and deadly
To begin with and will
Ultimately lead to the
Destruction of your
Soul and your mind
And yourself trying
To keep up with the "life
You have to be willing
To let go of the material
And let go of the rat race
And find the truth behind
Life and true happiness
Is to give and to receive
Rather than trying to
Take whatever you can
From whoever you can
Just to support your "life".

It is a cage for some people and difficulty for them to take the step out of that cage into the world. Very nice poem here, really like the way you spoke of the ways of people. Nice part here:
"Or if their very lives and
Existence depended on them
Rejecting the rat race and
Finding the door for
Themselves they would
Rather eat the poison"

I love how you used "rat race" and "Rather eat the poison".

Yep. The revolution will not be televised.
Your words are harsh but true...

Buying into the "life"
Or the American dream
That is toxic and deadly
To begin with and will
Ultimately lead to the
Destruction of your
Soul and your mind
And yourself trying
To keep up with the "life
You have to be willing
To let go of the material
And let go of the rat race
And find the truth behind
Life and true happiness

Society has alot to answer for.... :o)

Yep. So true but at least people are waking up to the real truths.
It's a sad waste of life. Finding "me" the person inside, and following passion in all things pursued that makes for a life. Thoughtful penning.

Yep. Couldn't have said it better myself. :)
I like the informality with which you right. It makes the poem feel more like one side of a conversation. I like this one a lot. You make some very interesting observations about people today. Nice work!

Yep. We have to be willing to break the mold and shape our own destinies.
And once you've done it for yourself, you never needed God after all...we become just life support....good point...

Actively embracing misleading values that may give immediate rewards but long term loneliness and misery is no way to live- why do we continue to, I wonder?
